小学校のころにひとつだけ読んで、そのあまりの面白さに目からうろこでした。短編のすばらしさに目覚めた瞬間でもありました。
その後この本を読んで、もうＯヘンリにどっぷりとはまりました。
これほど純粋に｢面白い｣短編を書く人、他には知りません。
ほかの短編も読み漁りましたが、やはりこの本は最高傑作ばかりの選りすぐりだと思います。挿絵も結構いいです。
最近の何が言いたいんだかよくわからないような短編で胃もたれをおこしてる人にお勧め。あまりの巧みさに胸がすっきりとしますよ!

「オー・ヘンリーの話は短編で読みやすく、中身が濃い」と、父が言ったとおりであった。その傑作中の傑作を選りすぐったことだけあって面白い。一つ一つの作品に人生の深さが感じられる。ぼくにとってオー・ヘンリー短編集はこれが一冊目だが、その一冊目にこの本を選んで良かったと思う。図書館などで読み終わった人でもついつい手元に置きたくなる一冊。一気にオー･ヘンリーの名作を一冊で知りたい人、「短編小説の王」を知りたい人にはお薦め。

古今東西、短編の名手と呼ばれる作家は多いですが、
その中でもO.ヘンリーは名手の中の名手です。
いわゆる古典に近い位置づけですが、
現代小説にない面白さがあります。

たとえば、
ストーリーの起承転結の見事さ。
市井の人、無名の人々を見守る優しい視線。
O.ヘンリーは、
読者に素直な感動を与えてくれるという点で、
まさに傑作と作品を多数残した作家です。

あまりにも有名な「最後のひと葉」と「賢者の贈り物」、洒落たストーリーの「金の神と恋の使者」等がお勧め。
特に若い読者に読んでもらいたい作家です。
