埼玉県生まれ。大阪外国語大学イタリア語学科卒業後、翻訳家として活躍

カルヴィーノ,イタロ
1923‐85。現代イタリアの代表的作家。キューバで、農学者の父と植物学者の母のあいだに生まれる。幼いときに北イタリアのサンレモにもどり、20歳まで過ごす。第2次世界大戦中、パルチザンに参加し、ドイツ軍と戦う。戦後、トリノ大学を卒業し、出版社勤務、雑誌編集などをしながら小説を発表し、注目される(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

２０世紀イタリア文学を代表する文学者、イターロ＝カルヴィーノの名作の新訳です。
1968年の安藤美紀夫さんの旧訳は、マルコヴァルドさんの四季 (岩波少年文庫 2084)
硬いところがあり、私は新訳の出ることを期待していました。
関口氏の筆は、工夫された丁寧な訳出です。

おりしも英文科学雑誌Natureの７月19日号において、イターロ＝カルヴィーノのSF著作
CosmicomicsThe Complete Cosmicomics (Penguin Modern Classics)
が科学的に正しい考察に基づいている点を評価しています。
この作家は多面的ですが、「マルコヴァルド」を初めてとする寓話的な手法がひとつの核になるでしょう。

子どもから大人になりかけの、背伸びをしたい時期にぜひとも読んでほしい。
人生は夢や希望だけじゃなくて現実もしっかりあって、つらいことや悲しいことが他人事のように繰り返されていく。
でも、そんな日常の中にも美しいものがちゃんと見つかる。この本を読めばそのあたりの諸事情が、マルコヴァルドさんを巡るもの悲しい空気の中でなんとなくわかるかもしれない。
読み終えたとき、うさんくさい夢のサイズはちいさくなるかもしれないけれど、人生のサイズは大きくなるはず
