　本書は動物を主人公にした、様々な冒険のお話が組み合わさって構成されています。自然の描写がとても美しく（それが訳のうまさによるものか、原著の素晴らしさによるものかは私には判断できかねますが・・。）、読んでいて、とても清々しい気分にさせられました。

　家庭観や友情、旅、金銭感覚、果てには動物の理科的な知識まで手に入れることが出来る優れた本である、ということが言えると思います。

　ヒキガエルが重要な登場人物となることは、読み進めてゆけばすぐにわかると思いますが（「ひきがえるの冒険」を副題とする書籍もあるほどです）、私はヒキガエルの自己中心主義的な性格の印象は、前半、後半、読後とそれぞれ違ったものでした。そのにくめなさは、愛しいほどの正直さと自分の欲望に素直である所にあるのだと思います。とても魅力的な主人公でした。
　また「パン神」の存在には少し疑問を持ちましたが、受けた印象としては『ナルニア国ものがたり』のアスラン、つまりキリスト教的な印象を受けました。しかしその他の所で、宗教性を感じる部分があまりなかったので、全体的には薄い印象です。

　子どもが本書のような冒険鐔や、ファンタジーといったジャンルに魅了されるのは、家や学校といった「囲われた空間」があるからであると言っていいと思います。我が国では1886年と1900年の小学校令によって、初等教育が義務化、無償化されますが、それは本書の起草された時期と同じくします。
　つまりわずか100年間で児童文学は児童文学としての地位を確立してきたと言えます。そのような風潮の初期の団塊で本書の著された意味は、大きいのではないでしょうか。

作者が、幼い我が子に語りかけるつもりで書いた１冊と聞いて、
母親として興味を持ち、読んでみました。
主人公のモグラも可愛らしいけれど、
強烈なヒキガエルも憎めません。
舞台がイギリスの田園世界なので、
外国に馴染みのない息子は退屈するかと思ったのですが、
個性的な動物が素朴でユニークな物語を展開するためか、
引きこまれていたようです。
息子よりもむしろ、親の私が引きこまれていたかも知れません。
風景描写がきれいで、それにヒキガエルと動物のやりとりがユーモラスで。
親子で浸りたい１冊でした。

　なだらかな丘、ゆったりと流れる川、草木をさわさわと揺らして通り過ぎてゆく風。英国の美しく、のどかな自然を舞台に、モグラ、ネズミ、アナグマ、ヒキガエルの小動物が繰り広げる冒険の物語。これ、好きだなあ。
　モグラくんが、「今日は、お散歩日和だ。身体がむずむずするぞ。足が歩きたいって言ってるぞ。風の向くまま、気の向くままに、ちょっくらそこまで出かけてみようか」てな感じで、近所の川べをとことこ歩くシーン。あの辺からね、英国産の温雅な動物ファンタジーのあたたかさ、のどかさ、楽しさに魅了されましたねぇ。
　「ぷっぷー。ぷっぷー」と、自動車という乗り物にすっかり夢中になってしまったヒキガエル。車の魅力にとり憑かれて、アル中ならぬクルマ中毒状態の彼の目を覚まそうと、モグラくんやネズミくんが救いの手を差し伸べます。彼ら小動物たちを結ぶ友情の絆、相手への思いやり。そういうあたたかな味わいも、とてもいいなあと気に入っています。
　原題は、『The Wind in the Willows』（1908年）。石井桃子の訳文も親しみやすく、雰囲気とセンスがあって心地よいです。
　そうそう、それと、この本のことをきっかけに、中学生の少女（爽子）と少年（耿介）の気持ちが触れ合う場面が素敵な一冊があるのだそうな。高楼方子（たかどの ほうこ）の『十一月の扉』。近いうちに読んでみよう。
