この可愛い表紙と、コミカルなタイトル、そして児童書、とういうことから、軽めのお話を想像する人が多いと思いますが、なかなか考えさせられるお話なのですよ、これが。
「それは、もうずっと前に始まっていたことだった。けれどもぼくたちは、去年の復活祭の日曜日、朝ごはんの時にようやくそのことにきがついたのだ。」
第1章の始まりの文章です。
おじいちゃん、お父さん、お姉さん(15歳)、ぼく(12歳)、弟(小学校2年生)、一見平和な家族に思える。けどその日、追放されたきゅうりの王様が、この家に逃げ込んできてから、家族が抱えていた問題が浮き彫りになっていく。って展開なんだけど、なにがすごいって、15歳･12歳･9歳、この微妙な年齢の差をうまく書き分けてるってことです。
ヘヴィーなテーマを軽妙なタッチで書いていて読みやすく、でも、問題をはぐらかすわけでもなく、とても楽しく一緒に悩みました。
とりあえず、王様をやっつけなきゃね。
