主人公のままむすめは、いつも辛い仕事を押し付ける意地悪な継母や義姉と一緒に暮らしていた。ある年の大晦日、継母はある噂を聞きつける。14歳になる若い女王が、マツユキソウを持ってきた者に褒美として金貨を与える、というおふれを出した。しかし「マツユキソウ」は４月にしか咲かない。

　このおふれを聞いた継母たちは、金貨欲しさに仕事を終えたままむすめを、「マツユキソウ」を取りに森に行かせる。
　ままむすめは寒い森の中をさまようが、森の奥のほうで誰かが火を起こしているのを見る。そこに居たのは１年の各月を司る「月の精」の兄弟たちだった。
幼稚園の劇でやったので、とても懐かしく読みました。気立ての良いままむすめが母や義姉にいじめられ、魔法で助けられる設定は「シンデレラ」と変わりませんが、こちらは読んでいるうちにロシアの森がありありと目に浮かんできます。

小学生の時に単行本を買ってもらって以来の思い出の物語です。
何度読み返しても本当に清らかな物語で心に残ります。女の子にぜひ読んでもらいたいです。
