　アリスには　「不思議の国のアリス」と本作「鏡の国のアリス」と二作ある。「不思議の国のアリス」の方が　ディズニーで映画化されたこともあり有名だが　内容的には「鏡の国のアリス」の方が数段深みがあると僕は思っている。

　チェスを下敷きにしたことで　非常に知性的な雰囲気が漂っている点が心地良い。アリスが歩兵から女王に成り上がるという基本線をまず　キャロルは一本立ち上げているわけだ。

　それに加えて　マザーグースから引っ張り出してきた登場人物が楽しい。ハンプティダンプティなどは　この作品で初めて知ったお方である。

　さらに　独特の「寂しさ」が　通常低音のように流れている。本作は童話であるが　いわば短調で書かれているかの趣がある。楽しいだけの話ではなく　むしろ　どこか哀しげな雰囲気がある。

　こう考えると　本当は子供にはちょっと難しい童話なのかもしれない。ルイスキャロルが　自分の許から去っていくアリスを描いた作品だとも評されているのは　そんなムードがあるからかもしれない。

数年前、ふと本屋で「鏡の国のアリス」（「不思議」の方がたまたま置いてなかったからだが）を購入し、読んでみると頭が内容の意味を捉えようと文字を追ってしまうためあべこべな内容にチンプンカンプンになりつつインパクトの強いキャラクターに助けられなんとか読了しました。
しかしイマイチ釈然としない。
子どもの頃に一度読んだときは（そのときは「不思議」の方だったが）もっと世界が生き生きとしてリアルな活動をしていたのに、内容さえも朧気でスッキリしない。
それは夢見がちで想像力豊かだった子どものころと比べ何でも現実的に物事を考えてしまう心がイマジネーションのキャパシティーを超えてしまうからでしょう。
それから半ば意地になって読み返すうちに少しずつキャラクター達が「生きて」きて「鏡の国」の空気に溶け込めるようになりました。
今では私にとってふっと現実生活に疲れた時、無心になり（ならざるを得ない）頭を空っぽにして物事を捉えられるようになれるこの作品はなくてはならない作品です。

不思議の国のほうが有名ですが
鏡の国も負けず劣らず面白いです。
こっちのほうがナンセンスの面では上だと思いますし。

アリスはディズニーアニメが日本では一番有名だと思いますが
原作のほうが面白いですよ。
ディズニーアニメは不思議の国と鏡の国をちょっとまぜてますので
アニメの原作を読もうというひとは両方セットで買うことをお勧めします。
値段も高くないですしね。
