「ナルニア国ものがたり」のラストを飾るに相応しい作品になっています。
Ｃ・Ｓ・ルイスがこの物語を書くに当たって、この結末を最初から用意していたのかどうか解りませんが、この前の巻の「魔術師のおい」で見せてくれた「世界」の初めと、この「さいごの戦い」で見せてくれた「世界」の終りがあって初めて、このナルニアの「世界」が本当の意味で完成しています。と言うか、幾多のファンタジー作品の中で、これほど見事にその物語の「世界観」を見せてくれた作品はないだろうと思います。それほど見事なラストでした。このシリーズを読み始めたら、是非ともラストまで読んで欲しいと思います。
そんな中で、最初の４人の兄弟姉妹からスーザンを脱落させているところに作者の意図を感じます。現実的な少女で、「華のある時」を希求し、「華のある時」を惜しむキャラクターとして描います。妹の「美」に嫉妬する非常に現実的な少女をファンタジーの世界に登場させ、この「夢の世界」からの脱落者として描いています。
ここまで読んで初めて、このファンタジーの素晴らしさが解ったような気がします。

《ナルニア》が歴史に残る、伝説的名作になった最大の理由は、この見事な完結編にあると思う。作品のテーマは、ずばりと言えば《死》。童話には似つかわしくない、この重いテーマを、ルイスは、実に美しくポジティブに描きだしています。最近、この本を読み直したのですが、若い頃より深い感動を覚えました。《ナルニア》シリーズのラストを飾るにふさわしい、素晴らしい傑作です。

＜ナルニア国のおわり頃＞、＜ナルニア王家最後の王が＞、で始まるこのお話は終末が暗示されています。かってナルニアへ来たことのある子供達とチリアン王の奮闘もむなしく、醜悪なサルの姦計によってナルニアは滅亡へと一直線に向かいます。

愛する世界と愛する者たちの敗北に絶望しますが、最後の時彼らが見い出したものは反対側の世界、真のナルニアでした。その時古いナルニアはアスランの命により終りを告げ、彼らは喜びに満たされて新たな命を得るのでした。
アスランによるナルニアの輝かしい創世、そして雄渾壮大な終末のイメージは他に例を見ないくらい素晴らしいです。

余談：指輪物語は完全な勝利で終わりますが、去り行く者との永遠の決別があります。反対にナルニアは敗北と死で終わるのにもかかわらず、愛するもの全てとの再会が待っていました。トールキンとルイスがインクリングスというグループで創作を共にしていたことを考えると、興味がつきません。是非併せてご覧下さいませ。ファンタジーの魅力を満喫できると存じます。
