　魔法使いや王様、ヤカマシ小僧、カッパ、妖精、郵便屋さん、おまわりさん、ヒドラなどが登場する不思議な童話集です。作者の想像力と、チェコスロバキアというお国柄がこの物語を生んだのでしょうか。初めてハードカバーの古い装丁で読んだ小学生の頃、チェコスロバキアって不思議な国だと思いました。妖怪がたくさん出てきて人間と共存しているところは日本の民話にも通じるものがあると思います。
　チャペックの作品は「Ｒ.Ｕ.Ｒ.」があまりにも有名ですが、このお話ももっと有名になって良いと思います。作者のお兄さんの手になるシンプルな挿し絵も楽しいです（私のお気に入りは、三日月の下で踊る犬の妖精の絵です）。
