この本の素晴らしさについては既にたくさんの方がレビューされているので、翻訳に焦点を当てて書きたいと思います。

著作権が切れた後で一斉に新訳が出ましたが、その底本的な位置にあるのがこの内藤氏による訳です。本訳は時々「読みにくい」とか「日本語として変だ」という指摘を受けます。確かにてにをはが省略された部分がありますし、堀口大學の「人間の土地」での訳は「伝えたいことがたくさんあるんだ」と言わんばかりの前のめりのテンポなので、サン・テグジュペリ本人の文章を忠実に訳したものなら、新潮社版の河野万里子氏の訳が一番近いものだと思われます。

しかし、本著に根付く独特の清涼感と空間性は、他の訳本とは比べものにならないほど高いです。それはリズムが日本語としてこなれているからです。内藤氏は原文を直訳するのではなく、日本語のリズムとして心地よいように、原文よりもオフビート気味にリズムを抑えた翻訳をしています。一文の整合性よりも、作品の本質を日本人的な情緒で無理なくとらえられるように文章を調整して訳しているわけです。そして面白いことに、音読したり声としてイメージ化したとたん、原文のリズム感が文章に宿ります。まるで「ほんとうに大切なものは目に見えない」という本書のメッセージを実践するかのように。そんな訳を原文の文化的なイメージを殺さずに綴れている本にはなかなかお目にかかれないと思います。

直訳という点では確かに違うかもしれませんが、日本人の心にすっと響く、調和のとれた創造的な訳という点では、今でも全然色あせない名訳です。むしろこの訳が本書の日本での人気を決定づけたのではないのでしょうか。私がこの本を初めて読んだのは10歳のときでしたが、昨今出たさまざまな新訳を読んでも、やはりこの訳が一番新鮮な読後感が残りました。

すでに古典となりつつある本ですが、多くの日本人がこの本を子供時代に読んだきりにしているのではないでしょうか。少年文庫として出版されていますが、この本は決して子供向きに書かれた本ではありません。大人が人生について、世の中というものについて、そして人という生き物、その心について考える本です。少し見方をかえて読んでみると、現代社会を生きる私たちが忘れている心について考えさせてくれます。

おまけになりますが、外国語学習にももってこいの本です。なにしろ、考え付く限りの言語に翻訳されていますから。日本語で読み直した後には、英語、フランス語、、、、でいかがですか？

世の中、複雑な数字や、小難しい政治や、時間刻みの仕事があふれ返っていて、
それらをこなせると人生で一人前になったとつい履き違えてしまうけど、
ほんとうに大切なものって、そういった生き抜く技術から見たら、
ちっとも役にたたないものの中に在るんじゃないのかな。
誰かを愛さないまま生きて、
ほんとうに生きていると言えるの？

王子の純真な瞳が、あなたの心をそう言ってのぞきこむよ。
