本書の中には、生きて、苦悩して、プレッシャーに打ち克とうとする生身のレオナルドがいる。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチは様々な本で描かれているが、本書のレオナルドはその中でも、飛びぬけて精彩を放っている。
そして、こちらが主人公なのだが、レオナルドにひろわれて彼の徒弟となる少年サライ。彼とレオナルドとの関係は、単なる師弟の枠におさまらない深い信頼と愛情で結ばれている。年の離れた二人が、お互い干渉しあい影響されていく様子が作者の信念としてこちらにも充分伝わってくる。ただのこそ泥に過ぎなかったサライ。彼の奔放な性格、偉大な芸術や、権力にも臆さない野卑めいた態度は、レオナルドにとってなくてはならない存在となる。天才レオナルドが、名声や虚栄心に押しつぶされて力が入りすぎ芸術家としての飛翔を遂げられずにいる時、サライの存在がカンフルとしての役割を果たすのだ。
もう一人、重要な役割を果たすのがベアトリチェ。美人に生まれつかなかった負い目をはね返し、芸術に対する深奥な理解力を持ったこのお姫様は、サライとレオナルドにも多大な影響をおよぼす。
本書に描かれている『モナリザ』の真実は、これはこれでとても説得力がある。レオナルドとサライそしてベアトリチェの心の動きを丹念に描いてあるからこその説得力なのだろう。うん、本書を読めてとてもよかった。

文句なしの星五個です。
天才ダ・ヴィンチの人としての魅力を余すところなく伝え、同時に読み手に希望を与える大傑作。こそ泥の少年サライが何とも愛らしい。
作品集5には、この『ジョコンダ夫人の肖像』とともに『誇り高き王妃』が収められていますが、別の訳者の作品を一冊にすることには反対します。

塩野七生をして、書く事あたわず、と言わしめたレオナルド。誰も彼のすべてを書くことができない天才。かの有名な鏡面文字。戦乱に明け暮れた時代を生き抜き、決して一個所に止まることをしなかったレオナルド。そんな状況でも、常に持ち歩いたと言われる唯一の絵画がみなさんご存知の「モナ・リザ」である。これはそれについての物語である。

時代背景がわからないとちょっとばかり、面食らうかもしれないので、塩野七生のルネッサンス物など読んでから、この本は読んだ方がいいかもしれない。天才にいつも大切な「Wild」さを供給したサライの言葉を、われわれ大人もシッカリ聞いて、表面的な日々の人生で大切なナニカを汲み取ってほしいものである。
