題からするとネコが主役のようですが、イヌ(ジョン・ブラウン)が主役のようです。
ローズおばあちゃんと二人の生活に満足していたある日、美しいまよなかねこが現れておばあちゃんは心を奪われてしまいます。
｢ネコなんていらないよ、ぼくってものがいるじゃないか｡｣

こんなにも愛してるのに・・・愛する人は時に残酷な事をしますよね、だから胸が痛んで星4つです。でもその痛みさえも受け入る決心をしたジョン・ブラウンの愛はけなげで本当に広くて深い。
今｢愛」について考えたり悩んでいる人は涙さえ出てしまうかも・・・。
絵も落ち着きと温かみがありステキです。

いつもローズおばあさんにピッタリと寄り添い、心から愛して守っていた大きな犬、ジョンブラウン。
おばあさんは、ジョンブラウンといるだけで幸せだったのに、ある日家の外に真っ黒けな猫を見つけます。仲良くなりたくて毎日ミルクをやろうとします。ジョンブラウンは毎日それを邪魔します。
でも、ある日起きて来ないローズの気持ちを一日考えに考えて、「あの子が来れば病気が治るのかい？」と聞きます。
ローズのためにすべて受け入れるジョンブラウン。
おばあさんと同じように暖炉の前で肘掛け椅子にすわる猫。
おばあさんの足元にいつものように座っているジョンブラウン。

ジョンブラウンの愛は、それだけ深くて大きいのですね。

でも、ストーリーには出てこない、表紙裏のイラストが気になります。
猫は庭の木の枝にのんびりと座っているのに、ジョンブラウンは門の外に立っていて、それを門から悲しそうに見ているローズ。

ローズとジョンブラウンに、明るい未来はあるのだろうか？うう〜！気になる〜！！！
