ビネッテ　シュレーダーの初期の作品ですが、個性的な色使いの絵が美しい絵本です。　１枚１枚の絵に独特の世界観があって、うっとりとみとれるようです。　主人公のルピナスさんは女の子ですが、そのほかに登場するキャラクターが独創的で素敵です。

小学生の頃、何度も読みました。とにかく絵が美しいのです。少しかげりを帯びた幻想的な絵。読んでいる自分も絵本の世界の中に引き込まれるようです。本を広げることで別世界に連れていってくれる、すばらしい絵本だと思います。話そのものは大人が読んでもいいようなものだと思います。私はハンプティダンプティが好きでした。

　表紙の窓の向かって右手にいるルピナスさんに、隣にいる鳥のロベルトが、友だちを連れてきます。紙でできた四角い箱の形のパタコトン氏と、こうもり傘を持った卵形のミスタ・ハンプティ・ダンプティ。ロベルトに紹介されたふたりが、ルピナスさんと三人で散歩に出かけるところから、話が滑り出します。
　静まり返って、ちっとばかしぞくぞくっとさせられる絵の色合い。そこに、独特な幻想味と風情をたたえているところが、この絵本の一番印象的なところ。見ていると、絵の中に吸い込まれる、そんな不思議な気持ちになりました。
　頁をめくるごとに、絵の背景の色合いが変わっていくところ。パタコトン氏が取り出した紙が、話の状況に応じて様々に形を変えていくところ。万華鏡のように、くるり、くるりと切り替わっていく絵の変化には、昔ながらの人形劇に通じる面白味もありますね。
　エンディングの見開き二頁の絵に宿る、しんとして満ち足りた静謐感も心に残ります。本を閉じた後に、瞼の裏に残像として広がる風景の余韻、て言ったらいいかなあ。しんみりとしてしまいました。
　1939年、ドイツ生まれの作者ビネッテ・シュレーダーが30歳の時、1969年に発表した絵本。原題は、「LUPINCHEN」。
