「心の哲学」の第一人者であるジョン・Ｒ・サールが行った、６回の連続講演をまとめたもの。各回のテーマは、心身問題、「コンピュータは考えられるか」、認知科学、行為の構造、社会科学の展望、意志の自由。第２章では、有名な「中国語の部屋」の議論も登場する。

一般聴衆向けの講演をベースにしているため、説明は丁寧で、分かりやすい。他方、文章の構成はよく整理されていて、講演ベースの文章にありがちな乱雑さは見られない。著者による、一般向けの入門書としては、他に「マインド−心の哲学」（朝日出版社）があるが、基本的な論点については本書の方が分かりやすいと思う。本書を読んだ後、「マインド」を読めば、理解が深まるのではないか。

ただ、誠に残念なことに本書は現在絶版である。版元の岩波書店は是非本書を現代文庫あたりで再版してほしい。

　「中国語の部屋」の議論で、心・意識関連の本には必ずといっていいほど登場するジョン・サール氏の著作である。意識関係の本や哲学に興味のある方ならば、サールという名前をご存知の方は多いと思われる。しかしながら、そのサール氏が書いた著作そのものを読んでみたという方は非常に少ないのではないだろうか。
　本書は「中国語の部屋」の議論（理解というものがコンピュータからは生まれでないという議論）についての著作ではないのだが、その提案提出後、多くの科学者、哲学者からの批判、意見などを受け、よりたたき上げられた理論武装で講演したものをほぼそのまま書き下ろしたものである。そのため、議論は深遠な内容であるにもかかわらず、非常に読みやすくて理解もしやすい。まさにサールと感銘するスマートな語り口で納得させられる（それを正しいか否かを判定するのは読者の側であるけれども）。
　本書は2005年に発刊されたが、内容は1993年の「SELECTION 21」の一冊として岩波書店より刊行されたものと同じである。
　手ごろなサイズと分量で、説得力のある「意識の哲学」に触れたい方にお勧め。
