　旧著の単なる増補改訂版と思って読んだ人は驚いた筈だ。それは、第７章が新たに加わったのみならず、この２０年間にわたる著者の知見が総動員されて、まさに「全面的に改訂」されている、からではない。そんなことは今回の著作集の初回に出た第２巻「隠喩としての建築」を読んだ者なら予想できた。そして、この第１巻に至るまで毎回味わってきたことだ。

　この本を貫く洞察、「日本近代文学」の起源には政治的闘争の挫折があるという洞察が、２０年間を経てまるで違って見えてきたのだ。６０年代~７０年代にあった政治的闘争の挫折から文芸批評を始めた著者には、この洞察は徹底的な自己批判でもあった筈だ。早い時期に著者は徹底的なマルクスの読解に挑み、画期的な成果を上げていた。しかし、政治的闘争に立ちかえることは決してなかった。単なる政治闘争では歯が立たないことを知悉していたからである。と同時に、長年にわたる批評活動によって「日本近代文学」の営為のすべてが「近代の超克」に収斂することも確信していた。著者によってこの超克すべき近代が「資本―ネーション―ステート」であると初めて明確に捕らえられたのであるが、この認識によって、ほぼ３０年に一度反復されてきた「政治的闘争の挫折」がまるで違って見えてきたのだ。

　今後闘争は文学的な闘争でも政治的な闘争でもないことは明かである。おのおのの持ち場で、倫理的―経済的闘争はすでに開始されている。「定本　柄谷行人集」全５巻の成果はこの闘争の指針であり続ける。

本書では「日本」「近代」「文学」「起源」のすべてが徹底的に批判されていますので、「近代文学の起源」を考える上で、どこの国にでも適用できそうな普遍性を獲得しています。今読み返してみても、大変斬新です。

本書はフーコー（のエピステーメー）の決定的な影響下にあります。フーコーが「言葉と物」で経済・生物・言語で行ったと同じことを、柄谷氏は日本の近代文学で試みた、というところかと思います。そのためか、本書でも「言葉」が極端に重視されています。また、本書の主張をそのまま受け入れるなら、たとえばシェイクスピアの描いた人物は＜人間以前の人＞（フーコー）ということになりそうですし、芭蕉も北斎も、風景を発見しないで紀行文や浮世絵を書けたことになります。でも、このような「切断」を過剰に評価することには、問題があるのではないかと思います。浮世絵師たちは現実の松ではなく概念としての松を描いた、としても、彼らが理想とする松の概念に到達するために、現実の松を徹底的に見たはずです。シェイクスピア劇の登場人物たちは人間ではなく役柄だ、という人たちこそ、別の先入観に捉えられているのではないか？　北斎の「海」はグロテスクなほどリアルではないか？　概念（イデア）がフィクションというのなら、物自体もフィクションです。

（以上のことは、フーコーにも、また広くはポストモダン一般にも言えると思います。ただし、「トランスクリテーク」の柄谷氏は既にこのような段階を脱却したように見えます。数ヶ国語に翻訳された氏の代表作ですが、現在の著者にとって、あるいは本書は不本意な作品であるかもしれません）

著者一流の論証なき独断と偏見。情けないくらいの稚拙な論旨。適当な引用と盗用の羅列からなる議論。漫画のような読みやすさから人気のある著者だが、あと１０年もしないうちに忘れ去られ、誰からも見向きもされなくなる、漫画以下のオリジナリティ。
