この本は、中村太郎さんの視点で、これまでの日本と世界の障害者のスポーツの歩みを一挙に振り返ることができます。
パラリンピックの歴史の中に、そして現在も、障害者スポーツをとりまいている障害があちこちにあるような気がします。

ドーピングに対する処置も、選手の経済的支援に対する問題もオリンピックとは勝手が異なりますし、今回出場できないIDクラスの無念、また、文部省・厚生省というタテワリ行政の問題により被害を被っている人たちもいます。

アスリートがとっくの昔に心身の障害を乗り越え、競技に、練習に励んでも、障害者スポーツをとりまく障害はまだまだたくさん残っている、ということなのでしょうか。

大事なのは、人が、その能力の限界に挑戦している、パラリンピックはそのもっとも重要な確認の場となっているということだと思います。スポーツは生き物ですね。そして、それを生きている選手たちには、一瞬がチャンスだったりするのだろうと思います。
どんなことがあっても、選手として培った強いハートを持ちつづけて欲しいと思います。

障害者スポーツの歴史や各競技の解説、選手たちの人生ドラマが描かれており、暗い世相を明るくするいい本です。
障害者になった経緯や苦労しながらトレーニングをしている話は感動ものです。
著者の中村先生はシドニーパラリンピックの日本選手団チームドクターで、大分の障害者自立情報センターの理事長でもあります。

自分が新聞製作にかかわっていながら、「障害を超えてスポーツに取り組む障害者」といったお決まりのパターンの新聞記事やテレビニュースに食傷していた。しかし、この本を読んだことで、ソルトレークからはパラリンピックを別の視点で楽しめそうだ。知らないから、楽しめなかった自分に気づき、もったいなかったと思った。歴史やルールはもちろん、運営上の問題点の指摘、提言もなされている。また淡々とした筆で織り込まれた選手たちのエピソードがよい味わいを出している。シドニーパラ五輪でチームドクターを務めた筆者と選手たちとの信頼関係が感じられる。マスコミ関係者や障害者福祉にかかわる人はもちろん、スポーツ、医療、福祉関係者は必読だ。

　今後の社会の礎になる、小中学生向けにもぜひ出!!版を考えて欲しい。岩波ジュニア新書にぴったりだと思う。文庫化も期待したい。
