上野千鶴子編の論文集や金森修の『科学戦争』モノなど、我が国の社会構築＝構成主義が蔓延している状況に、著者のあの独特の皮肉で切り込む本書の翻訳の意義は、まず大きい。卒論や修論で社会構築主義あるいは社会構成主義の立場に関心があり、具体的なデータをこの手法で分析したい人たちにも十分に勧められる。皮肉やジョークをきかせ翻訳泣かせの原文を上手に料理しており読みやすい――はっきり言って他のハッキング翻訳本はなかなかきつくて最後まで読み通せません）。しかしこの翻訳本の最大の不幸は、書肆が岩波書店だということ。この書店の翻訳本の扱いのお家芸のうち最悪なものを２点あげておこう。まず（１）全訳ではないということ［これは訳者の責任ではなく無教養な編集部の悪弊］、そして（２）索引がないこと［ページを増やしてコストをかけることをトコトンいやがる本屋らしい］。ま、アマゾンでは原著も安く買えるし、同時に購入すればハッキングの皮肉利きまくりクールな分析眼を玩味できます。

統計数理の分析などで秀作を生んでいるハッキングだが
この本に限って言えば、いささか古びた議論を繰り返しているだけのように見えてしまう

この著作はいわゆる社会構成（構築）主義の全体図を俯瞰して、構成主義の問題点と意義を整理しようという試みで書かれているが、
ハッキング自身は明らかに構成主義に対する懐疑的な立場を採用しており、そのためハッキングの描く構成主義は、
批判のための構成主義であって、引用文献なども叩きやすいものを恣意的に選んできている

構成主義を巡る議論は近年、ルーマンなどのラディカル構成主義や語用論的転回を経て、かなり込み入ったものになっているが
そうした論点は殆ど取り上げられず、８０年代以前における主観/客観図式の中での「構成主義は観念論だ」
「いや、そうではない」的な時代遅れの議論を冗長に繰り返している感は否めないだろう

近年の構成主義はここで批判されているようなものでは全くなく、より正確な地勢図はガーゲンなどによって既に成されているが
かつてこうした構成主義、観念論、客観主義を巡る議論があったということを再確認するための歴史社会学的資料としては面白く読める

名前から社会構成主義に関する入門書だと思って買ってしまったが、どうも違うようだ。
ジェンダー、難民、幼児虐待・・・というものは、基本的にその名前が付けられた時点
で、名付けた人とそれを使用する人の「意図」が含まれ、社会的に構成されるとする。
ある意味バッサリと切って説明するのでかなり分かりやすいのだが、同時にそうなのか？
という疑問も残される。
どうも勢いが強く、それに振り回されそうな本なので★3とした。
