何か勘違いをして、説明資料を分かりやすく作るには「デザイン」の本を読むのが良いと思って、いくつか買った本の中にこれがあった（今思えば購入の動機という観点からは的はずれとも言えるが）。以後、過去に勉強した心理学の外、ギブソンの本を読んだり、デザイナーの人達の各本を読みその見方を自分なりになぞる（つもりになる。実際はそりゃ素人には無理な話と思われる。でも、自分なりに「感じる」こと位は出来ると思う）楽しみが出来た。倉俣史朗氏の未現像の風景等を知ったのもこれだし（プレミア付きで高かったが、買って後悔はしていない）、カスティリオーニ等々の本に出会えたのも、この本の影響は無しとしない（最近は吉岡徳仁氏の本等が結構気に入っている。なお、建築家やデザイナーの方々の書く本も結構読むようになった。基礎的な本も含めて。）。私のような素人でも、多く感じる所がある、高いそうだけれど（私はアマゾンで衝動買いをしてしまうので、あんまり価格を考えなかった）、良い本です。

お高いです。
気安く購入できる金額ではありません。

しかし。
それだけの価値のある美しい本です。
眺めているだけで気持ちがしゃきんとするような。
ベッドでごろりとしている時に
眺めてはいけないような、
そんなしゃきんと、きっぱりとした本です。

美しく、研ぎ澄まされ、
写真もとても美しいです。

デザインや建築などを職業とされている方はもちろんのこと、
日々の生活をよりよくしたい、
よい美しい日々を送りたい、という方にも
オススメです。

　「デザインとは何か？」「デザインに何が可能か？」を実例に基づきわかりやすく解説した著書。実作品に基づきながら理論が語られており、原研哉氏の思想・作品集としてだけでなく、デザイン全般に関する理論書としても読み応えあり。決して安くないが、デザインに興味のある者にとっては必見の書。

　デザインに関する著者の言葉を幾つか引用する。デザイン（の可能性）について考える参考になればと思う。

　人間が暮らすことや生きることの意味を、ものづくりのプロセスを通して解釈していこうという意欲がデザイン（抜粋）

　デザインは情報の建築であり、その建築は情報の受け手の脳の中に建てられるものであると考えてきた。その建築の材料は、感覚器官を通して外部からもたらされる情報でもあるが、同時に、それらの外部刺激によって呼び起こされた「記憶」も、大変重要な建築の材料となっているのではないかと最近は思うようになった。（抜粋）

　デザインとは差異のコントロール（抜粋）

　デザインとは感覚を覚醒させ世界を感じ直していくこと（抜粋）

　新しく奇抜なものを創造するよりも、日常生活の中にありふれたものを未知のものとして再発見する感性の重要性を説いているのが印象的で、その意味では「路上観察」にも通じるものがあるように思う。皆が当然だと思い込んで気にも掛けないものに注目し、新しい側面を発見するという意味において・・・

　また、デザインとアートの関係についても触れ、アートは「個人が社会に向き合う個人的な意思表明であり、その発生の根源は個人的」であるのに対し、デザインは「社会の多くの人々と共有できる問題を発見し、それを解決していくプロセスにその本質がある」とし、「問題の発端を社会の側に置いている」点でアートとは異なると指摘する。つまり、制作のプロセスを共有できるか否かに違いがあるということだろう。

　最後に、生活の基本的な営みとして「衣・食・住」が挙げられるが、その次に来るものとして「休」を指摘しているのも印象的。個人的にはこれからは「遊」の時代だと考えているが。
