   とてもユニークな研究をしているIBM研究所のチャイティンのエッセイを集めている。チャイティンは、ゲーデルとチューリングによって指摘された形式的な公理の限界を示した研究の後継者である。特に、純粋数学にもランダム性が存在するということを発見して注目されている。

   本書はチャイティンが受けたインタビューや講演をまとめたものだ。内容は彼自身の研究経歴の紹介（著者が早熟の天才的な人物であることがわかる）、数学に対する考え（なぜセクシーかと言うこと）、ランダム性ということ（多くの純粋数学者が嫌悪している）、数学基礎論の紹介など多義にわたっている。最初の方のインタビューは、著者の経歴を物語風に構成しているので、チャイティンの人柄がわかる楽しい読み物になっている。対話形式ゆえにわかりやすい面もあるが、その反面、インタビュワーの興味と知識に依存しているので、馴染みがない事柄もあるだろう。その後は、著者の独特な考え方を述べたもので、話題は難しいかもしれないが、数学基礎論に興味を持っている人は惹きつけられるだろう。また、ランダム性と言うことで、統計物理や量子力学の話題をふんだんに使っているので、物理に興味を持っている学生には面白いはずだ。

   インタビューや講演の時期が異なるので、同じ話題が何度も出てくるが、その分著者の考え方に馴染んでいける。他の本では紹介されることが少ない話題なので、ありきたりの数学解説書に飽きた方にはおすすめしたい。（村藤一雅）

1931年に発表されたゲーデルの「不完全性定理」は、数学の公理的推論には限界がある、つまりいかなる公理系に対しても、それに含まれる一連の公理だけでは証明も否定も出来ない（＝決定不可能な）命題が存在するという大定理を証明したもので、当時の数学界に衝撃を与えただけでなく、今日の論理学や数学、哲学にも大きな影響を持ち続けている。

自然数論の中にさえ、今日の数学で用いられている公理だけでは決定することのできない命題が存在するという、驚嘆すべき事実をゲーデルは示したのだが、そのような命題も新たな公理を追加することによって証明できるようになるという可能性は全く否定されていない（もちろんその新たな公理系に対してもまた、「不完全性定理」により、新たな決定不可能命題が存在するのであるが）。

しかしこの本の著者（述者）チャイティンは、いかなる公理系によっても証明も反証も出来ない、つまり「絶対的に証明不可能な命題」が自然数論の中に存在するという、さらに驚愕する事実を証明している。本著作では、講演や様々な人物によるインタビューを通して、チャイティン自身の理論の創造にいたる経緯や、「数学と芸術の共通性」を見出す彼の数学に対する思い入れが表明されている。一般向けということで、「絶対的に証明不可能な命題」の専門的な証明は含まれてはいないが、それがどのようなものであるかについて、かなりイメージをつかむことの出る彼自身の概説が含まれている。

一切の数学的推論の力の及ばぬ領域にある命題を彼は数学的構造を持たない「既約数学的事実」（それ以上基本的な数学的記述に還元することのできない事実）と呼び、それを証明する唯一の方法は、それ自身を一つの公理として受け入れることだけであるという。そのような命題が実際に存在し得る、数学の驚くべき深遠な世界を垣間見る興奮を味わわせてくれる著書である。

寡聞にしてチャイティン氏のことは知りませんでした。なんとなくタイトルに惹かれて手にとってみました。
数学に代表される理論科学でのランダム性と、コンピュータなど実学におけるランダム性の捉えかた方の違いを、学問の性質の違いを前提にして、現実的な方程式の取り扱を模索している--など、おもしろいと思える記述はありました。

しかし、翻訳ということもあり、飽きてしまいました。講演やインタビューが主となっているせいかもしれません。チャイティン氏のしっかりした著作を読んでみようと思いました。
