初めは、放射性物質ではなく中性子線やガンマ線を浴びた
ことによる被曝の際、どのような生物学的変化がおきるのか
という医学的な興味で読んでいました。染色体の破壊像や、
幹細胞の破壊のみならず微小環境の破壊が生体にいかに
重大な影響を及ぼすのかについての知見など、その点でも
非常に興味深い内容でしたが、治らない患者に、その

状態を維持するだけの処置をすることにどれだけの
意味があるのか、本人はどう思っているのだろうか
と苦悩する看護婦、医師の姿がむしろ
印象的でした。そして最後まで現実から目を背けなかった
家族の方々に敬意を抱きました。
今回被害にあわれた方々の尊い犠牲から、
いろいろなことについて深く考えるきっかけをいただきました。

ご冥福を心よりお祈りしたいと思います。

記憶にも新しい東海村の臨界事故。
放射線を浴びるとどうなるか？
どうなるの？癌？白血病？
その程度の陳腐な知識しか持ち合わせておらず、それ以上の知識を得る機会も全くなかった。
この本を読むまでは。

放射能によって染色体が破壊されてしまう。全ての生命活動の営みが止まってしまう。
再生されない皮膚。機能しない臓器。悪化するばかりの容体。
放射能の怖さを、もっと知るべきだし、知らせるべきだと思う。
少しは広島・長崎の惨状も思い描けるのではないだろうか。

　日本初の臨界事故での死亡者となった大内氏と、彼の治療に当たった医療団の、迷いながら、苦しみながらも簡単に選べる死ではなく、暗闇を手探りで進むような生にこだわった、「生命とはなにか」「生命力とはなにか」「なにが人を生へとかき立てるのか」をその凄惨さから目を逸らさずにしっかりと見つめた素晴らしいドキュメントでした。
