4.0 out of 5 stars 本のタイトル通り、怪獣自体を語る内容, 2005/4/14
怪獣の着ぐるみを手がける特殊造形師の著書だが、造形のハウツー書でもなければ、特撮裏話の内容でもない。タイトル通り、著者の品田氏が小さい頃からいかに怪獣が好きだったかを語る内容に、多くボリュームを割いている。
いわば現在の仕事に落ちつくまでの半生記というべき内容だ。
勿論、特撮造形の世界に入ってからの仕事ぶりも語られているので、『ゴジラVSビオランテ』『ゴジラ モスラ キングギドラ　大怪獣総攻撃』の初公開メイキングスチルもいくつか掲載されている。
が、あくまでも本書のメインは、怪獣というものに愛着を感じる品田氏本人が「怪獣とは？　ゴジラとは？」を探求する内容なので、メイキング主体の内容を期待する人には向かないかも知れない。
だがこの本は、造形に携わっている人が、その対象たる怪獣にどういう思いを抱いているかを知ることが出来て、その意味では大変面白い。
怪獣のスーツを“着ぐるみ”と呼ぶのか“ぬいぐるみ”と呼ぶのか、を語った部分も興味深い（ちなみに品田氏は“ぬいぐるみ”だというスタンス）。
ゴジラをはじめとする特撮作品が好きな人なら、手にとってみてはどうだろうか。

私も怪獣が好きだった。
私とほぼ同じ世代の「造型師」が怪獣映画をまとめている。ほとんどが「みたみた！」と思えてしまうものばかり。とてもおもしろい。
いくつかおもしろいと思うポイントがあった。
ゴジラの顔や体の構造はさすがだと思った。初代ゴジラから、東映のシリーズ化された時代のゴジラ、最近のゴジラと微妙に体の動きや口元の動きが異なっている。それもそのはず、材質はもちろん組み立て方や構造もかなり異なっていたんだ。
「膝付き四つ足怪獣」へのこだわりの部分。子供の頃、明らかに人が着ぐるみに入っているとしか思えない、膝をついて四つ足になっている怪獣がいた。ウルトラマンでもゴジラとの対戦相手でも。これを不自然に見せないように、わざと下半身が写りにくい角度からとったり、目隠しになるようなものを作ったり、やっぱり気になって隠そうとしていたんだ。
あと、私が一番気になって記憶に残っていた「ヘドラ」に関してちゃんとゴジラ映画の鬼っ子として一言記述されているのもいい。
ミニチュア作成のこだわりの記述にも納得。写真にも関心。とてもおもしろい。
後半のインタビューの中にはちょっと内輪の話しすぎるのか意味がくみ取りにくいところもあった。でも、総じて楽しく読めた。

基本的にこの書物は品田氏が造形を仕事にする以前の、「ゴジラとは品田氏にとってどのような存在なのか？」ということを述べてくれる。
やはり映画本体の造形をしている人の考え、思いがよく手にとってわかるような書物になっていると思う。
