Annette Messager (b. 1943) is an artist with a mission, as she puts it, to "make life more interesting than art." One of Europe's leading contemporary artists, she trained at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris but quickly eschewed any hierarchical notion of art form. Since the late 1960s, she has experimented with and combined a wide variety of media, from painting and sculpture to assemblage, photography, film and embroidery, often culminating in installations of great potency. Her work is at once intimate and universal, using familiar objects (toys, fishing nets, gloves) in a wryly challenging manner that leads us tolook at our cosy world with fresh eyes.
Annette Messager's inventive and wide-ranging style has won her admirers all over the world, and she has shown her work at the MoMA, New York and the Pompdiou Center, Paris, but also in such diverse places as New Delhi, Berlin, Japan, and Vancouver. For this first monograph on Annette Messager, the author has worked closely with the artist to produce a visually stunning work that provides a clear picture of the creative development of a major contemporary artist. Fully illustrated, including a 34-page introductory "portfolio," the book proposes a thematically organized text incorporating first-hand interviews with the artist as well as examinations of the significance of individual works. About the Author
Catherine Grenier is curator of contemporary collections at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in the Pompidou Center in Paris. Among the exhibitions she has organized are "Tony Cragg," "Luciano Fabro," and more recently, the acclaimed "Abracadabra" at the Tate Gallery in London.
