世間で多く信じられているように、コンピュータチェスの方式は単なる全幅探索方式である、*わけではない*。

実際には、末端ノードに近いところでは指し手の性質と評価値を利用した枝刈りの手法（Futility Pruning）が行われていたり、Null Moveと呼ばれる、いったんパスを行ってみて、それで十分にその局面の評価が高いならば実際に指し手を読む必要はない、などのソフトな枝刈りの手法が広く行われている。

この本は、それらの広く行われている方法に対して、さらに筆者の拡張案を適用した場合について、同じ深さの読みでの探索ノード数、問題集に対する正答数などを統計的に紹介している。

インターネット上で筆者のいくつかの論文をあたれば、同様の内容を探すことは十分に可能だと思うが、この本ではNegaMaxといった最も単純なアルゴリズムから、αβ、PVS、QuiscenceSearchと言った（比較的）『進んだアルゴリズム』までを序章で擬似ソースコードとして説明しており、コンピュータチェス、すなわちゲームにおける探索のアルゴリズムの入門としての価値ァ?十分に高い。

実際に精読すると、統計の数には圧倒される。これだけの統計をもとにしないと、アルゴリズムの評価は行えないと自戒する次第である。
