2002年、中田秀夫監督作品「リング」をリメイクしたアメリカ映画『The Ring』（邦題『ザ・リング』）」がヒットしたことで、映画のオリジナル版と原作の両方ににわかに関心が集まった。あらすじは、この映画の大勢のファンにはおなじみだろう。浅川という雑誌記者は、姪の死と3人の高校生の死のつながりに気づき、調査を続けるうちに、「この映像を見た者は、1週間後のこの時間に死ぬ運命にある」という恐ろしい警告を秘めたビデオテープを発見する。彼は友人の協力を得て、そのビデオの出所が、超能力者らしきある女性とその娘貞子であることをつきとめた。古典的な幽霊譚によくある筋書きどおりに、登場人物のひとり、それもえてして罪のない人物が、スケープゴートに選ばれることになる。しかし、貞子とその母親を虐げてきた女性嫌忌社会は、結局その罪を自らまのあたりにし、滅びる運命にあった。おそらくは漫画から影響を受けたと思える、ややありきたりで、著者の意図とは別にコミカルに聞こえる表現 "Ryuji was right. Men could not bear children" （「竜司は正しい。男は子どもが産めない」- 原著より）は気になるが、映画のファンなら期待を裏切られないだろう。日本人が彼ら自身をどう見ているかに興味があれば、きっと本書に夢中になれるはずだし、読み終わったあとは思いきり背筋がぞっとするだろう。
