5.0 out of 5 stars 究極の「野球百科事典」への第一歩, 2004/6/16
Total Baseballの第８版。かつてはBaseball Encyclopediaと並ぶ記録集であったが、Encyclopediaが1996年以来版を絶やしているため、実質的には現在最高峰の野球百科事典だ。

第８版の最大の特徴は、図版の挿入だ。各シーズンの回顧の欄では、その年の名場面や代表選手の写真を掲載し、また、名選手や貴重な場面の写真、絵画を約100点集めた「ベースボール・ギャラリー」が載せられている。これらは、視覚面で読者に訴えようとする試みといえよう。

一方、読み物は、新たに「野球の歴史に残る100人」という欄が設けられ、日本からもイチロー選手と王貞治氏が選ばれ、その功績が述べられている。

分量は第７版より約２割増しているが、The Ultimate Baseball Encyclopedia という副題に恥じない、意欲的な内容となっている。愛球家の手元には欠かせない一冊だ。
