性描写が激しい為、本国で発禁になった本。 それで騒がれている話題本ですが、読んでみて、中国だから、というわけではなく、例えこの本が、アメリカやヨーロッパや日本で発刊されていたとしても、その性描写や登場人物が漂わせる倦怠感を越える、素晴らしい本であることには間違いないと思います。

中国の最先端をゆく上海の、限られた最先端の人々の実情がわかる意味でもいい本だとは思いますが、それよりも 主人公達の心の中に揺れる、優しさや切なさややりきれなさに、どこの国や都市であろうと関係ない人間の弱さを感じました。

　ある時代や地域や国の風俗・習俗を描いた小説は、今まで見たことも聞いたこともない世界にびっくりしたり慄いたりするのを楽しみにしてる。ところが、自分が今まで生きてきた年月のうちに見たり聞いたり経験したりした風俗・習俗が書き連ねられ、その上それがいかにも先端だと言わんばかりの語り口調だったとしたら、果たして楽しんで読めるだろうか？

原著が1999年の小説とは言え、どこか危険な魅力を漂わせる”上海”という国に惹かれ、その「今」を描いてる部分を期待させるのは間違いない。ところがその「今」は取り立てて突き抜けてる訳でもない、恋人がヘロインに手を染めたくらいで世界の終わりがごとく純粋に落胆する主人公では、ＴＶで懐かしの映像とやらを流されているようで白けてしまってもしょうがない。

　まして、不能の恋人がヘロインに溺れてしまっても、妻子あるドイツ人とのセックスをやめようと思わない、その辺の無執着やあるいは罪悪感なんかの描写も”いつか来た”表現。敢えて言うと、昔何かで「中国では公園がラブホテル代わりだ」と聞いて、本当かよ？と訝っていたのだが、主人公とドイツ人が事も無げに夜の公園に車で乗りつけたが閉っていたので仕方なく公園の外でやった、みたいな記述があって、それだけは流石に知らない世界、だった。

ひとことで言えば、山田詠美の中国版という印象でした。
山田詠美、小池真理子、村上春樹の作品になれている人には
ちょっと物足りないかもしれません。
問題の性描写はかなりリアルです。発禁もうなずけます。
しかし、それがこの本の要であって、これがなくなったら
西洋と東洋の入り混じる上海に住む主人公を描ききれない
と思います。

ただ､さっきも言った「物足りなさ」のせいで、一部の人から
見れば､わいせつ小説にしか見えないのかもしれません。
やっぱり、なにかが足りないんですよね・・・。
