つい先ほど我が家に"the　ArkU"が届き、一通り読み終えた後"TFが好きな人に勧めたい"衝動に駆られ、初めてレビユー作成しました。
この本を一言で言い表すなら、「日本で独自展開されたTFシリーズ(HM〜とザ バトルスターズ)の設定画資料を海外で出版したもの」といえばしっくりくるかと思います。

日本で販売された設定画資料集といえば、アニメ放送当時に出版された大百科シリーズか記憶に新しいところでは昨年発売した「ビジュアルワークス」が該当しますが、日本で独自展開したシリーズのみの資料集は未だに無く、「ビジュアルワークス」に関していえば独自シリーズの設定画がが全体の1割以下という有様(決して本の出来が悪いという意味ではない)。
書籍に限らずTFシリーズで人気が根強いのは初代と2010、ここ最近の商品展開もこの2作の登場キャラを中心に行われている現状…
そのことを踏まえたうえで"The ArkU"を手にとって見ると
良い点
・1キャラごとに設定画を惜しみなくでかでかと掲載、原画の線が薄くて印刷に耐えられないものはわざわざトレースして書きおこす徹底ぶり。
・キャラクター名などの名称が独自シリーズのをそのまま採用（もちろん英文です）。
・1話限りのゲストキャラも紹介文込みで掲載。
悪い点
・キャラによっては設定画を掲載しているページに大きな偏りがある。
・トレースした線が他の線画に比べて太い(または丁寧ではない)ので違和感を覚える。

自分が見て感じた部分はこのあたりですね、掲載ページに大きな偏りがあるのはキャラによっては設定画がそれしか無い(または紛失している)可能性が考えられます、惜しみなく載せられているキャラはがんがん載せている感じなので。
それ以外でコレは欲しかったと思ったのは、トランスフォーム展開する過程の設定画とカラーページ（表紙以外は全部モノクロの線画なので）、さすがにこれは贅沢かな。

英語読解力が乏しい自分が表紙だけみて購入しましたが、買ってよかったと思っています。
「ビジュアルワークス」の不足分はこれで補いましょう（笑）
TFが大好きで、作品ごとの登場キャラを把握したい人向けです。
