この物語の中には子供時代、アメリカでの生活、故郷への贖罪の旅の三つの部分がありますが、特に子供時代の出来事は主人公だけに留まらず読者の心の何かをえぐります。父親の愛を渇望し、友情と同時に弱さ、軽蔑、保身のための狡猾さを持っている主人公は罪の意識を引きずりながら大人になりますが、その心理面がよく表現されていると思います。また活き活きとした凧揚げ大会に対して、故郷への旅で明らかになった恐怖と貧困に満ちたアフガニスタン人の暮らしは日本人にとってかなり衝撃です。作者はアフガニスタンの良家の出身の医師で、主人公とどこか重なる部分があるのかも知れません。

アメリカへ移民する前の生活と移民後の新しい環境に順応していく様子を描いてあるだけかと思って読んでいたら、思いもよらない展開が待ち受けていて、最後まで楽しみながら読むことができました。日系アメリカ人や中国系アメリカ人を題材にした作品は多くありますが、アフガニスタンとアメリカが舞台になっているので新鮮でもありショッキングでもありました。平易な英語で書かれているので高校生程度の英語力がある人なら十分に読みこなすことができると思います。

アフガニスタンを舞台にした物語に出会う機会はあまり多くはない。
本作は、ソビエトによるアフガン侵攻から現在にいたるまでを描いている。
前半は、ソビエト軍の侵攻前夜のアフガンの風景が、上流階級の少年の目で
描かれ、内戦に苦しむ同国の現状ばかりをニュースで耳にする私には非常に
新鮮に映った。しかし、その中でも父親の愛情を渇望し、身分制度の中に
知らず知らすの間に取り込まれた少年の物語は、どこの国にも共通の普遍的な
テーマとアフガンの文化を取り込んでいる。少年期の主人公アミールの
心の動きの描写などは見事。使用人の息子ハッサンへの複雑な感情がつぶさに
描かれている。ただ、惜しむらくは、アフガンを離れてから再び戻るまでの
展開がやや雑に思われる点か。二十余年に及ぶ長い時間を描いているので、
このボリュームに収めようとするとそれも仕方がないかも知れないが…。
英語は比較的易しい。時折出てくるペルシャ語の単語に最初戸惑うが、
比較的よみやすいと思う。
