詳細な目次やデモがこの教材のサポートWEBページで参照できます(www.lingualarts.comの"About The Guide"の項目に"Table of Contents"と"The Sound System"が掲載されています)。ご購入検討の際、ご参考になるでしょう。８枚分のCD教材をiPodに入れてみたところ「47曲、7.3時間、 410.2MB」となりました。(ちなみに「American Accent Training」(Ann Cook) もiPodに入れてます。こちらは215曲、6時間、339.1MBとなっています) 本教材と上記「American Accent Training」は優劣付け難いです。重複する特長は多々あります。どちらの教材もリズム・アクセント・イントネーション、発音のlinking(例：What is your name ? -> ワッチャァネイム？)・Reduction(例:I want to -> アイ・ワナァ)の課題を十分扱っていると思います。 主な違いとしては、"American Accent Guide"の方が母音・子音を発音を更に詳しく扱っている処ですね。特に、紛らわしい母音・子音の比較(例えば日本人が聞き取りを苦手とするｌとｒなど)が掲載されています。また発音を学ぶ際の例として単語を列挙する際に、同意語／反意語とペアとして現れますので、暗記に一石二鳥な構成となっています。また日本人の英語学習者なら馴染みのある発音記号(IPA：International Phonetic Alphabet)で発音が記載されているので見易いです。発音時の唇・舌・口内の位置関係もイラストで掲載されています(※)。 (※)IPA発音記号や実際の口・舌の動かし方は、www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/で参照できるものと同等ですので、こちらもご参照下さい。こちらのページでFLASHムービーや音声で実際の発音の仕方が確認できますので、けっこう重宝しますょ。(^-^)

日本人が学んでいる英語は事実上アメリカのものですから、発音もアメリカのものを学びたいと思っている人が多いと思います。しかし、和書は間違いだらけのものか、大学用教科書で付属ＣＤ/カセットがなく説明の一部を教員に委ねたようなものばかり。

それでアメリカで出ている本に目が向くわけですが、発音記号に馴染みのないものを使っているぐらいならいいのですが、何故か間違ったことを書いてあるものが多いのです。これは恐らく、著者が専門の音声学者でなく、ＥＳＬ教師で、十分な知識を持っていないからでしょう。

本書は違います。著者は音声学が専門で、書いてある内容に誤りはありません。そして、留学生・移民向けの発音矯正を20年近く行なうという豊かな経験を持っているため、説明もさすがに勘所を心得ています。

ですから、現時点でアメリカ発音を訓練したい人にとっては、本書が唯一最良の選択肢だと断言できます。

なお、付属ＣＤ８枚は、実際に使うにはトラックの区切りが少なすぎるので、ＭＤにコピーしてトラックを細かく区切ってから使うべきでしょう。

アメリカで話されている英語の発音を身につけるための解説と練習がまとめられている。全体は8つのセクションからなり、それぞれに対応したCDが付属する。
最初のセクションはイントネーション・ストレス・リズムを取り上げ、全体のイントロとなっている。その後、母音、単語ストレス、リズム、子音(3セクション)と進み、最後にまたストレスとイントネーションに戻る。この構成は、一般的な発音解説本(たいてい個別の音の発音を最初に取り上げ、その後アクセント等に進む)とはやや違っているが、実は良く考えられている。すなわち、意味の上で重要なところは発音される時に強勢が置かれるという原則を最初に提示し、強勢の核となる母音の発音をしっかり身につけさせる。しかる後に、ストレス・リズムをさらに詳しく解説、練習した上で、子音に進む。最後の総仕上げとしてもう一度ストレス・イントネーションを取り上げる。このように、コミュニケーションに重要なものから順々に取り上げていくという一貫した考え方で作られている。各項目の説明はもれがなくていねいで、練習も豊富(間違いやすいペアの判別はとても役に立つ)である。
本書の練習をきちんとやり遂げるのは骨の折れることだと思う。しかし、著者は最初に次のように述べている。”Language is an art, and it is the most complex of human behaviors -so there is no quick and easy way to master speaking a new language clearly.” まさしくこの通りだが、何を使って練習するかで結果の出方は大きく異なる。本書はアメリカ英語の発音をきちんと学ぶ意志と意欲がある学習者が、効率的に結果を出すための最良の教材である。
