廃屋に住み、殺人と自殺未遂を繰り返す男、ジョニーの闘いの軌跡。

にこやかに話していたかと思えばいきなり叫び出し、ナイフを振りかざして殺しまくる。すさまじい暴力描写、サディズムと悪趣味がつまったブラック･ユーモア、キャラクターがかなりデフォルメされているのに反して、異常に描きこまれた真っ黒な画面からは圧迫されるような不安感が漂う。この作品が魅力的なのは、作者Jhonen Vasquezのアートのおかげだろう、と思う。頭と目は大きく、体や手足は極端に細く長く描かれた特徴的でかわいらしいラインは、ティム・バートン的だと言えばわかりやすいかも。そして読み進んでいるうちに、果たして狂っているのは彼なのか、それとも世界の方なのか、分からなくなってくる。きっと最後には、この孤独な殺人鬼の未来を祈らずにいられなくなっているのではないだろうか。

魅力的な絵とユニークなキャラクターで織り成す恐怖の物語、JTHM。主人公は殺人鬼のNNYことジョニー(Not Happy!)。物語ではマーダーとしてのジョニーだけではなく、ジョニー自身の苦悩も描かれている。英語が分からなくても絵だけで十分楽しめる。辞書を片手に読みすすめれば、パンチの効いたブラック・ユーモアがあちこちに散りばめられているのに気付くだろう。

読み終わった時、ジョニーの言う“This is not me”の意味を考えて欲しい。殺人と自殺未遂を繰り返すジョニーは、決して私達と異質の存在ではない。私達は、誰しも“ジョニー”になる可能性を秘めているのだ。

西尾維新作品では零崎一賊という「理由なく殺す」という殺人鬼集団が存在するが、NNYもまたそれに近いのかもしれない。清清しく、晴れ晴れと、人と戯れ、人を殺す。
殺意に流れ流され、そんな自分を嫌っていて、自身も死のうと試みる。
酒鬼薔薇聖斗少年よりもジョニーが恐ろしく、美しく感じてしまうのは気のせいだろう。
ダークヒーロージョニーに乾杯。
