結構長いお話で、早口で読んでも１０分ぐらいかかりました。
けれど、子供はその間ずっと真剣そのもの。

ひとりぼっちの岩山と、ことりとの長い長い交流により、やがて迎える嬉しい結末に、子供は心から幸せな気持ちになれたようでした。目を真ん丸くして拍手していました。読んでいる親までも、最後のことりの言葉を読むときには感極まって涙声になってしまいました。

（結末は大人なら読み始めてすぐに見当がつき、まさにその通りなのですが、物語全体を通してその過程を読み進むと、結末にものすごく感動してしまいます。）いつまでも手元に置いて読み返したい素晴らしい作品です。

エリック・カールの絵（コラージュ）は私個人としてはあまり好きではないのですが、子供たちにはとても好評です。この絵本も同様で、子供たちはことりや山の色をとても気に入っているようです。子供の心をつかむ表現がなされているのでしょうね。

この本は、とにかく心が動かされるお話です。孤独だった山が、小鳥とのふれあいによって、変化していくのですが、その過程での山の心の動きに、自分の心も同調してしまうという感じです。解説を読んでから、また新たな物を感じましたが、それがなくても十分に楽しめ、感じられる絵本だと思います。

砂漠の真ん中にポツンと岩だらけの山がありました。草木もなく、だから、動物も昆虫もいません。岩山は、たった一人だったのです。そこへ一羽の鳥が飛んできます。「誰？」と山は聞きます。
"I an a bird,,,My name is Joy"
と、鳥は答えます。山は、「また、来てくれないか？」とお願いします。鳥は、しばらくして答えます。

"Because no mountain has ever before cared whether I came or went, I will make you a promise......"

ここに「壮大な」物語が始まりました。

子供向けの絵本ですから、簡単な英語です。でも、ものすごく格調が高いのです。それは「喜び」の「約束」がまるで神さまからの約束に似て、愛と慈しみと優しさと、そして「厳しさ」を語っているからなのでしょうか。最初の１ページ目と最後のページの色合いが、まったく変化しています。それが、この物語なのでしょう。美しい物語、美しい絵、美しい精神に満ちています。
