まずは見出し語のレベルをSVL12000と比較してみよう。

見出し語＝4,764個
（同じ単語が2度以上出る場合は出て来た回数だけカウントしてある）
Level-1が395個、Level-2が461個、Level-3が367個、Level-4が394個、
Level-5が314個、Level-6が246個、Level-7が288個、Level-8が208個、
Level-9が225個、Level-10が232個、Level-11が285個、Level-12が296個、
SVL未登録が1,053個。以上合計4,764個。SVL含有率は77.9%（3,711個）。

"Dictionary"という性格上当然かも知れないが、"1100 words you need
to know"（見出し語920語/SVL単語559語(60.7%)や"Word Smart"（見出し語
824語/内SVL単語529語(64.3%）といった洋書ボキャビル本と比べると、
収録語数もSVL含有率もも断トツで多い。本書を辞書ではなくボキャビル本
として見た場合、「TOEFLテスト英単語3800」（見出し語3,786語/内SVL単語
3,313語(87.5%））に最も近い。

本書をシソーラスとして使うには見出し語が少な過ぎる。また、厳密な
同義語・反義語ではなく、もう少し大きな意味グループで単語達を整理
している場合も散見されるため、ピンポイントで同義語・反意語を探す事
は出来ない場合も多い（例：think,conceive,imagine,fancy,realize,
envisage,envisionは一つの意味グループとしてまとめられている等）。
一方、ボキャビル本として使おうとすると、SVL Level-10〜12の単語達
813個＋未登録単語1,053個＝1,866個という難易度の高い単語達が行く手を
阻む。

そんな訳で実は本書は使い方が非常に難しい。「引く」だけなら
英検2級程度から十分使えるが、前述の通りシソーラスとしてはあまり
使い勝手が良くない。一方でボキャビル本として使うなら、英検準1級
レベルの単語が9割5分以上完璧でないと、相当に苦労する事になる。

以上を勘案すると、英検1級受験者またはTOEIC900点以上と同等以上の
英語力を持つ人が、ボキャビル本として主に知識の整理のために使う
のが最適だと思われる。それ以下の英語力の持ち主の場合には、類義語
の微妙なニュアンスの差を解説されても、そもそも知らない単語ばかりで
却って混乱を招くだけだろう。もっとも非常に廉価でコストパフォーマンス
の高い本なので、とりあえず買っておいて自分がこの本を使うに値する
英語力に達するまで「ツン読」状態にしておいても損はない。

日本語の単語1語に対し、複数の英単語がある場合、ひとつひとつのニュアンスの違いは分からないことが多く、また、自分ではこうだと思っているニュアンスがネイティブに聞いてみると実は間違っていたということもあります。
そういった単語のそれぞれの微妙な違いを知るのにとても便利です
個人的にはシソーラスとは全く違う目的で使うものだと思っていますので、比較はしませんが、シソーラスと共に、上級者には役立つ１冊と思います。
ある程度英語力がある人でないと、定義の英語を読んでニュア
ンスの違いを知ることが難しいかもしれませんが、英英辞典を
問題なく使える人であれば、この１冊は役に立つと思います。

シソーラスの一種くらいのつもりで安い値段に引かれて購入したのですが、その中味の濃さと高度さゆえに意外な掘り出し物でした。英検１級以上の語彙レベルのボキャビル用の本として十分に活用できます。例えば１ページ目にある単語としては　abase, demean, debase, degrade, humble, humiliate mean to lessen in dignity or status　に続けて各語の説明が続きます。２ページ目では、abjure, renounce, forswear, recant, retract mean to withdraw one's word or professed belief に続けて違いが説明されます。本を読んでいて知らない単語をこれで引くと、時々見かけるけど意味はよく覚えていないという単語にも数多く出会えて、自然とボキャビルができます。値段の数倍の価値はあるかもしれません。ただ、定義がやや抽象的で難解に感じるので（当方の実力不足もありますが）星４つとしました。
