Perhaps best known by most Americans for his headline-making participation in the 1965 Selma, Alabama demonstration alongside the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Heschel was also an extraordinary Jewish educator and the author of nearly two dozen books. He inspired millions of Jews and non-Jews alike throughout the world with his writings and his campaigns for social causes.
Heschel was the descendent of seven generations of Hasidic masterscharismatic rabbis and teachers who led Jewish communities throughout Eastern Europe. He was raised on ancient religious teachings and folktales. Although his family was very poor, he was taught at an early age to help those in need, and he lived his life with that in mind. In his travels to synagogues, churches, and universities and in his meetings with world leaders he spread his message of justice and compassion, touching the hearts and minds of people all over.
