　表情を描くには必ず必要な本といえると思います。 　顔の基本構成の学習のあと、筋肉、そして表情と続きます。表情については７つのパートに分かれているのですが、喜びだけでも50ページ近く説明されています。 　本の最後には、この表情のときにはこの筋肉が働くという１欄表が乗せてあります。

　こんなに丁寧に顔を説明している本は今まで見たことがありません。

顔の大百科という感じです。表情についてとても参考になります。以前は、雑誌の切り抜き写真を見ながら顔を描いていました。しかし、雑誌の写真というのはライトのあて具合などから考えて、陰影が余りわからない部分が多く、技量不足も手伝って、顔を描いても平面でのっぺりした絵しか描けませんでした。この顔の大百科の場合は、顔の筋肉や表情によって目の形などが細かく載っているので、非常に参考になり、またほとんどが顔のデッサンなので陰影の参考にもなります。
値段は洋書の美術書にしては高く感じますが、和書にしたら恐らく１万以上はするだろうと思われるボリュームです。全編英語ですが、訳せないほど難しいとは思われませんし、基本は絵なので問題は無いと思います。
注意していただきたいのが、あくまで表情の描き方であり、リアルな頭部の描き方では無いと思われますので、ある程度頭部を描ける方がより力になると思います。

はっきり言って、この本はだれにも薦めたくない。絶対にライバルが増えてしまう！問題意識を持って顔の造形に取り組んでいる人がこの書を読んだなら、必ずレベルアップしてしまうだろう。非常に論理的で丁寧に解説がされている。

恐ろしく繊細な表情の変化を、実際に表現するときどうするか。その線は果たして必要か？もしくはもう１本線を引くべきではないのか。その人物は心から笑っているか？

口やまぶた、瞳の１ｍｍの変化が、取り返しの付かない距離をふたりの間に生んでしまう！表情はまさにこころのディスプレイなのだ。そして、決して隠せない。それは７つの表情筋によって支配されている。これをコントロールすることが、生き生きした表情を示すカギなのだ。

ずっしり重いハードカバーに見合った内容。リアルで、ときにユーモラスでもあるイラストを見れば、こちらまで釣られて俳優してしまう。辞書をめくりながらでも読む価値は十分だ。
