物理学徒に本書の説明は不要でしょう。知らなきゃモグリです。(^-^)
従来の３冊セットの改訂版(新しいintroductionと"extensive corrections")に、"Feynman's Tips on Physics: A Problem-Solving Supplement to the Feynman Lectures on Physics"(*)という一冊を加えた４巻セットです。この本(*)はFeynman先生の物理講義コースの試験準備をしている生徒向けにFeynman先生が講義した内容(unpublished分)と、問題＋解答(R.B.Leighton・R.E.Vogt両先生による)、およびMatthew Sands先生によるFeynman先生の追想録を加えたモノです。この本(*)単独でも発売されています。

この本は、Feynman先生の独特のフィルターを通じて大学教養レベルの物理学(力学ー電磁気学ー波動・光学ー熱学ー物性ー量子力学)を広く概観し、深く理解し、【味わう】ための本です。朝永振一郎著「量子力学I-III」(みすず書房)のように、非常に味わいのある書です。物理学のentartainment性を語らせたら、Feynman先生の右に出る人はそうナカナカいないでしょう。(^-^) 色々な意味で「普通の教科書」とは位置づけが違います。(ですので、他の教科書も適宜読みましょう)
一生モノですから、(各巻ペーパーバック版の改訂版も出る予定ですが)このハードバック版を買っても損はないと思いますょ。本書は、Landau & Lifshitzシリーズと同様、未来の世代に継承するに値する物理分野の「知の共通財産」です。こういう古典を新しい形で残す欧米出版社の努力は素晴らしいです。（なお出版社は"Addison Wesley"です）

物理学の広がりを林に例えてみますと、古典力学や電磁気学など各分野の木の幹に当たる部分に関する本書での説明は分かりやすいものではありませんでした。これらの基本的内容については本書に挑む前にまず他の入門向け教科書で勉強しておいた方がよいと思います。
一方、枝の広がりや木々の交わりにあたる部分の内容は豊富です。相対性理論と量子力学に重点を置いて講義の早いうちから導入し、他の分野を説明する際もこれらとの関連について言及していることも特徴です。

この講義は、学生に基礎をみっちり身につけさせることよりも、背伸びさせて少し遠くを見せてやるのが狙いだったのでしょう。
そもそもこの講義がおこなわれることになったのは、Sandsが物理学教程の改革を提案したことがきっかけです。
現代的で刺激的な物理学のトピックをCaltech入学後の早いうちから学生に紹介し、物理学に対する関心を喚起するのが目的でした。
講義を担当することになったのは、通常は大学院で講義していたファインマン。
学部新入生相手に講義をおこなった経験はなく、Sandsの回想によれば当初乗り気ではありませんでした。
講義を引き受けるにあたっては、ただ相手にあわせてレベルを下げるだけの講義にはしたくなかったのでしょう。

この本は講義録であり、教科書ではありません。

Sandsの回想によれば、文章には講義のくだけた雰囲気をあえて残しています。
そのため文体や表現が普通の教科書とは異なり口語的で、私の英文読解力では読みづらく感じることがありました。
とくにVol. 1で気になります。
Vol. 2, 3 では普通の教科書的な文体に近くなります（私が慣れただけかも）。
編集作業に慣れるにしたがって、Leightonその他の編者が積極的に手を加えるようになったのでしょうか。

また、ファインマンが新入生向けの講義を担当したのはこの一度だけです。
したがって、学生の反応や他の講師からのレビューに対応して年々改良していく機会はありませんでした。
この点では7th editionまで改訂を重ねている"Fundamentals of Physics"はじめ他の入門向け教科書と対照的です。

現代の（入門者向け）教科書が読者の理解を助けるようにレイアウトを工夫し図表を豊富に使用しているのに比べると、本書は見劣りします。
また、インデクスやクロスリファレンスが不十分で、どこを参照しているのか探すのに苦労したことが何度かありました。
ただし、これらは編集・印刷技術面での時代的制約によるものであり、同時代の他の専門書に比べて劣るものではないだろうと思います。

わたしは文学部出身ですが、岩波の入門コースとFundamentals of Physicsを読んだ後に本書に挑戦しました。
本書で用いられている数式は、入門コースより易しく、"Fundamentals of Physics"と同程度です。
しかし、"Definitive Edition"と銘打ちながらも数式に誤りが多いので、公式サイトのErrataリストは要チェックです。（リストの更新が2007年で止まっているのが気になります。）
