   J・K・ローリング著「ハリー・ポッター」シリーズの5作目は、前の年に経験した一連のできごとのあとすっかり自信を失った若い魔法使いハリーにとって、大きな試練となる1年間を描いている。ハリーが3大魔法学校対抗試合でヴォルデモートと痛ましくも勇敢に対決した事件は、どういうわけか、夏のあいだに広まったうわさ話（たいていの場合、うわさ話の大もとは魔法界の新聞「日刊予言者新聞」だ）では、彼をあざ笑い、過小評価するネタになっていた。魔法学校校長のダンブルドア教授までが、ヴォルデモートがよみがえったという恐ろしい真実を公式に認めようとしない魔法省の取り調べを受けることになった。ここで登場するのが、忌まわしいことこのうえない新キャラクター、ドロレス・アンブリッジだ。ヒキガエルを思わせる容姿に、間の抜けた作り笑い（「ヘム、ヘム（hem, hem）」と笑う）が特徴のアンブリッジは、魔法省の上級次官で、空きになっていた闇の魔術に対する防衛術の教授職に就任したのだ。そして、たちまちのうちに魔法学校のうるさいお目付け役となった。ハリーの学校生活は困難になるばかり。5年生は普通魔法使いレベル試験の準備のために、ものすごい科目数をこなさなければならず、グリフィンドールのクィディッチ・チームでは手痛いメンバー変更があり、長い廊下と閉じたドアが出てくる鮮明な夢に悩まされ、稲妻型の傷の痛みはどんどんひどくなり…ハリーがいかに立ち直れるかが、いま厳しく試されているのだ。

Synopsis

「４」の最後でVoldemortの復活をこの目で見、何か大変なことが起こりそうな不安を抱えたまま夏休みを迎えたハリー、おじさんの家がつまらないのはいつものことだけど、今年の夏は何故かロンもハーマイオニーもそっけなく、自分だけ取り残された気分。そんなある日、一見平和に見えるPrivet Driveに突然Dementorが現れ　いとこのDudleyを襲う。思わず禁じられた魔法を使ってしまったハリーに　退学処分の危機。ハリーを魔法の世界から排除しようとする何者かの陰謀なのか？今回の敵は　Voldemortだけではなさそうだ。

ただの子供向けのファンタジーだと思われがちなこのシリーズだが、第３作めくらいから始まったサイドラインも益々奥行きを増し、この第５作めでは完全にただのファンタジーの域を超えている。本作では　ハリーの父ジェームズの意外な過去、スネイプ先生の苦悩、ハリーのシリウスへの思慕、思春期を迎えたハリーのやり場のない怒り、ハリーの初恋など　盛りだくさん。そして　本作では　そもそも何故生まれて間もないハリーがVoldemortに命を狙われることになったのか、何故ハリーが毎年夏休みにはおじさんの許で過ごさなければならないのか　など　今までの様々な疑問への答えが明らかにされる。

私がこのシリーズを通して一番好きなのは、物語のヒーローであるハリーが、いつも清く正しいヒーローとして描かれてないところ。確かにハリーは皆とはちょっと違う特別な存在だが、それ以外は　嫉妬もする、間違いも犯す、嘘もつく、普通の少年である。そして、数々の失敗を繰り返しながら、魔法使いとしてだけではなく、一人の人間として成長していくハリーの姿に、作者の、ハリーに対する、自分の息子に対するような果てしない愛情を感じる。もっと多くの大人にも読んでもらいたいし、９月の翻訳版発売が待ちきれない人は、是非英語版にも挑戦してもらいたい。

今回のHarryは　今まで以上に重く、そして言いようのない怒り・苦悩や悲しみがあふれています。
　ある人の死の場面では　涙がとめどもなくあふれてきました。
　のちに　ダンブルドア校長の話の終わりで、ダンブルドア校長が涙するのを読んで　更に涙が止まりませんでした。
　かなり分厚い本で　初めて原本を読みましたが　完読できて、とてもよかったです。

待ちに待った5巻ということで、あっという間に読み切ってしまいました。今は6巻を待ち望むばかり… というのも寂しいので、また読み返しています。

今回の特徴としては、若いキャラクターたちの性格的な変化と成長でしょうね。大人になっていく途中のハリーたちが、とてもよく描かれていると思います。4巻までは子供だったのが、5巻では明らかに、そして急速に大人になろうとしています。今後彼らがどんな人間になっていくのか、楽しみです。

ストーリーは、今まで以上に暗く、最初から最後まで意外な展開です。イライラするような状況ばかり続いたり、ハリーの夢のことなど、ゾクゾク＆ヒヤヒヤする内容です。さらに、いままで何気なく語られてきた物事の意味、人物の重要性が少しずつ明らかになってきて、もつれた糸がほぐれてきたような、全体像がよりはっきりしてきたようなかんじです。どうやってこんな!に複雑な話を組み立てられたのかと、著者には頭が下がります。
