何と言ってもボブ・ディランの“自伝”なのです。面白くない訳がない。
そのうち翻訳も出るのでしょうが、ファンはまず原書で読んでおきましょう。文章もさほど難しくなく、何より内容が面白いので、スラスラ読めてしまうはずです。
彼の楽曲のように、場面や時間がいきなり飛躍するのも実に“らしい”。基本的にはニューヨークに出てきた頃の話が中心で、間に『NEW MORNING』と『OH MERCY』制作時の話の章があるという構成ですが、芸名の由来、生まれ故郷の話、ボビー・ヴィーのバックでピアノを弾いた時の話など、興味深いエピソードの数々が挿入されています。また風景や人物描写も秀逸で（特に風景などはかなり細かく描かれている箇所も多く、おそらく記憶だけでなく彼の創作も入っているのでしょう）、流石ディラン、と唸らせます。
あとこの作品では、“ラジオ”が重要な役割を果たしています。これは読んでのお楽しみ。

「わざと？」というぐらい粗い紙質も、趣があって自分は好きです。表紙写真も格好良いし（裏表紙は若き日のディラン）、装丁も美しい。ぜひ手に入れて下さい。

ボブディランの自叙伝である。
60年代の初めにニューヨークに出てきたところから話は始まる。グリニ
ッジビレッジでのカフェホアの舞台裏から始まって、ディランの目で見
た様子が彼の言葉で書かれていて、読者の目の前に見えるようである。
さすがにフォーク歌手／詩人と思った。
彼が言及してるのは、20年代のジャズ、ブルースから戦後のフォーク歌
手、60年代のロックミュージシャン、ビート詩人など、さらにはICE-T
なる近年のヒップホップ歌手まで、かれの音楽の根源に興味ある人には
たまらないのではないか。
ウッドストックやニューオリンズでのいろんなミュージシャンとの交流
も興味あるところである。
Chronicles:Volume oneであるが、twoは出るのだろうか？
彼らしくファンへのカラカイであろうか。

綴れ織りのように滑らかに語られる言葉。本書はどこにも「自伝」とは銘打たれていない。文字どおり"Chronicles Vol. 1"である。遍歴？年代記？自伝と解釈してもいいだろう。Dylanによって綴られた言葉の数々は、彼の魂の遍歴をリアルに伝えているのだから。彼の歌のいくつかが生まれる時の精神の軌跡について、あるいは彼の思想的片鱗について、さまざまな人々との会話について、形式や時制を越えて心地よいリズムと自由なスタイルで綴られていく。しかも当然ではあるが彼の思想的、音楽的背景が如何に深遠な知識や才能を背景としているかが驚くほど明確な表現で記されている。自らの根源的かつ人間的なradicalismに基づく究極の反権力的思想を語る行などは深い感銘を受けると同時に、それら表出である彼の歌が永続的な意義を保ち得ていることが、とりもなおなず彼の本質が「詩人」あるいは「歌い手」であることを如実に物語る。Dylanにとっての歌うことの意味とその喪失が自己との対峙のなかでさらなる次元へ昇華されていく過程も息を飲む。今、Dylanが歌う歌はそれらが書かれた時よりも本質的意味を持って我々に届いているのだ。彼が歌い続ける理由が「わたしには歌を伝えることが重要だった」という明解かつ意味深い彼の言葉のなかにみえる。
　Dylanがこの本によって提示してくれた驚くほど誠実な精神の軌跡は彼の歌と同じ次元に位置し、かつ相互にさらなる理解を促す上で必須のものとなった。本書を公表したDylan自身の行為は、彼があたかも求道者の如く続けているライブという行為とそこで歌われる歌と連動させて捉えねばならない。ここには終りも過去もない、結論もいらない文字どおりnever-ending tour （終焉なき旅）へと至る必然が語られている。Bob Dylanという存在が如何に唯一無二であるかをみせつけられる「今を語る自伝」である。
