歳をとったおじいさんとおばあさんは寂しくて､ネコを飼うことにしました。
おじいさんがネコを探しにいくと、このネコも､あのネコも､どのネコもいいネコに見えてきて、ついには100万匹のネコを連れてうちに帰ってきました。

でも、そんなにたくさんのネコを飼う事は出来ません。
おじいさんとおばあさんが選んだ方法は？

装丁が昔の本らしいつくりです。話の内容も､少し残酷かな。子どもって意外にこういった過激な話も好きだったりします。
根底のメッセージは、出会いの不思議さや、人の欲だったりするのではないかと思います。

子供のころ、父のひざの上で読んでもらった記憶が鮮明に残っています。心やさしい老夫婦の後をついてくるねこ、ねこ、ねこ。タイトルの100万匹という言葉の意味などわからない3，4歳の頃のことですが、とにかくたくさんのねこにびっくり、どきどきでした。こんなにたくさんのねこをどうするのかしら、と子供心に心配になりました。さいごに、ちいさなかわいらしいねこが老夫婦のもとに引き取られた時はほっとしたものです。

野原の草を一瞬に食い尽くしてしまう１億１兆匹のネコ！
池の水を一瞬に飲み干してしまう１億１町匹のネコ！

ひとつ間違えるとヒッチコックの［鳥］ですね。

かわいいネコが１匹欲しいという最初の目的をすっかり忘れてしまったおじいさん。
でも絵本はやっぱりハッピーエンド。
猫好きの人にはお勧め！かな。
