 「First Stepping Stone Book」に、9歳のマーヴィン・レッドポストを主人公にしたシリーズが新登場。ぼくはロバート王子にちがいない、とマーヴィンは信じていた。ロバート王子は長いあいだ行方不明になっているシャンプー王の息子で、目下のところ大々的な捜索が行なわれていた。マーヴィンがそう信じる理由は――まず、家族のなかで赤毛に青い目をしているのは自分だけだから。それから、マーヴィンが左利きなのは高貴な血が流れているからにちがいない、と先生が言ったから。そしてもうひとつは、おばあちゃんが家族のなかでマーヴィンに似ている人をひとりも思い出せないから。そんな理由から、自分は生まれたときに誘拐されて、何かの偶然でレッドポスト夫妻のところに預けられたにちがいないとマーヴィンは信じるようになった。物語は取るに足らないものだが、生き生きとした会話とマーヴィンの果てしない想像力は読者を引きつけて放さない。登場人物の造形はやや貧弱だが現実味があり、未解決のエンディングは読者に想像の余地を残している。いっぽうで、やや堅い感じのする白黒のイラストはあまり効果的とはいえない。対象年齢6‐9歳。

マーヴィンは赤毛で青い目の小学生。なのに家族は茶色の髪と茶色の目。誰にも似ていないマーヴィンはチャイルド新聞に載っていた記事を見て自分が生まれた日にさらわれた王子『ロバート』ではないかと考える―大人でも楽しめるハートウォーミングな結末と活き活きした小学生の会話。日本でもアメリカでも小学生の生活は同じようなものなので想像がつきやすく、英語が苦手な私でもスラスラ読めました。英語をやり直したい人にはお薦めですよ。

マジックツリーハウスを多読用に読んだ後に読んだので、自然な子供の会話に慣れるまで辞書を引いたりしましたが、それがくだらない単語だったりして笑えました。。RLは1.8ですのでほとんど辞書無しでいけます。内容は親と髪の毛と目の色が違うというだけで自分は誘拐された王子だと思い込んでしまったマービン少年の話です。完結しないところが後味が悪くて好きです。。。

3年生のMarvinは、赤毛に青い目の男の子。
子ども新聞で読んだ、行方不明のPrince Robertのニュース。
9年前に生まれた、赤毛に青い目のPrince Robert。
もしかして…？

表紙の感じから、もっとおちゃらけた内容かと思ってたら、全然違いました。
Marvin、こんなに繊細で、かわいい男の子だとは思いませんでした。

最初は冗談で言い出したことが、友達に言われいるうちに、
どんどん本当に思えてきて、そうなると、どんどん想像が膨らんで…
とか、そういうところも、すごく子どもらしくて可愛いです。

Prince Robertの話も、突拍子もない想像かと思ってたら、
本当に結構真実味があって、おもしろかったし、
それを言い出したMarvinに対する両親の対応もすごくいいし、
妹も可愛いし、シリーズ制覇する決心をしてしまいました。
