村上春樹の英訳版に挑戦したいなと思ってる方には最初の一冊としてお勧めです。
短編集なので集中して読みやすいですし、長編を読む足がかりになるのではないでしょうか。
アメリカの友人も面白いと読んでいましたし、言語の壁を超えて村上春樹の不思議ワールドを共有する喜びをもらいました。「パン屋再襲撃」は雰囲気が英語と妙にマッチしていてどちらが原文だか錯覚するほどの完成度。人物や場所の固有名詞が出てこない作品が多いので、英語で読んでも違和感なくすんなり入っていけると思います。外国人のお友達にも是非勧めてほしい一冊です。

などおなじみの短編を収録。そして人気の『ファミリー･アフェア』
も収録されています！

何回か日本語で読んでから、ペーパーバックに
挑戦すれば、そこまで苦にはならないと思います

代表的な短編が１７編載っていて次から次へと楽しませてくれる。前書きの｢The New York Times Book Review」でこの作品について日常生活で隠れているが近くに存在する微妙な世界を表現しているというようなことが書いてありましたがまさにそんな感じです。ユーモア、温かさ、時には皮肉も交えて日常生活とメルヘンが同居する不思議な世界という感じ。特にJay Rubin 訳はそんなHaruki Worldをうまく英語で表現しているような気がしました。中でもハンバーガーショップを襲撃してたくさんのバーガーを要求しながら飲み物は自分で払うと言い張る「パン屋再襲撃」はこっけいで面白かったです。
