ふだん、テンポ感のある大衆的な小説を読み慣れていると、
最初は単調な展開に戸惑いを感じた。英国貴族に仕える執事
の物語なんて、現実味に乏しく想像力が及ばなかった。
どうして評価が軒並み高いのだろうか、と、不思
議でもあったのだけれど、ページを追うごとに胸にじんわり
主人公の切なさが染み込んでくる。

人生の夕暮れ時に近づいて、誰でも悔いることや、また、か
なわなかった夢に、苦い感情を抱くことはあるのだろう。
ちょっとした歯車の狂い、ボタンの掛け違え、、、
及びもしない過去を振り返り、あったかもしれない別の人生
を想像してみる。

後半部分、特に、主人公が思いがけないアクシデントがきっ
かけになり出会う人々、そのあたりからの心理描写は秀逸！
最後まで引き込まれるように読んで、深い感銘を受けた。

タイトルの意味は、過ぎ去った一日を振り返ってそのとき目
に入るもろもろのこと、と、訳者のあとがきにある。最後に
夕暮れを比喩にしたメッセージ的な台詞が出てくるが、タイ
トルと微妙に異なる。
是非、あとがきもしっかり読んで欲しい。

あとがきにもあるように、まさに上質の感動を得られる作品
だった。

落ち着いた叙情と抑制といえばいいのか、作品にひたひたと心が吸い込まれてます。 映画のナレーションのように、文章一つ一つが 穏やかな男性の声で再現されていくような感じ。 すべての英国的なるもの、そして いかにも英国的な婉曲な言い回しを堪能したいなら ぜひこれを。

国家が、初老のオヤジが、思い出が・・・・
暮れていくまえの、輝きの記憶。
騒がないで、黙っていないで、忘れないで。

品格国家イギリスの礼節は冷淡なる現実をも
美しく包み込んでしまう。
そうして、日本にも、この小説の主人公たちが
かつて確かにいたし、今もいる。

英文のレベルは大そう高く、どちらかといえば
難文。読みがいあります、少し・・・泣けます。
