単語力を更につけたい思っているときに本書の高評価と語源から覚えるというアプローチに惹かれて購入しました。
二回通読した感想は、良書であるが人を選ぶというものです。
本書はネイティブがより幅広いvocabularyを取得することを目的としていますので、出てくる単語は上級ですし、単語数もそれほど多くありません。但し、語源に基づいてかなり深いレベルで単語の意味やニュアンスを教えてくれるので、覚えた単語は忘れにくいし身に付くと思います。また、個人的には読み物としても結構楽しめました。
日本人で本書が役に立つのは、TOEICで800点後半以上の上級の英語力があり、既存の英単語帳では物足らなくなっているような人だと思います。
また、単語数が多くないので何とかなりますが、索引が付いていない点は不満です。

かなり良書であると思います。
最初に現在の単語力テストがあり、ギャフンという状態で開始しましたが、序章の段階で、どのように勉強するか等のアドバイスがあり、かなりヤル気モードにしてくれます。
“Don’t read this book!　Instead, work with it.　Write in it, talk aloud to it, talk back to it ― use your pen or pencil, your voice, not just your eyes and mind.”とあるように、実際に使いこんで、勉強できるようになっています。
内容としては、“How to Talk about Personality Types”、“How to Flatter Your Friends”のように分類されており、言葉の説明、使い方、理解度チェックテストと続いていきます。豆テストがかなり頻繁にあるので飽きずにできますし、選択問題とともにスペルも書かなくてはならないので、確かに読んだだけでは難しいと思います。
体育会系のテキストという感じが気に入っています。
ただし、ある程度の英語力のある方にお奨めします。

これまでは日本の単語集ばかりを手につけてきましたが、この本は評判がよかったので、購入に踏み切りました。
僕の場合ですが、英語の勉強をするときに、あまり手を動かさなくなったような気がします。単語の書き取りなどは、大学受験が終わってしまってからは、全くといっていいほどしていませんでした。

しかし、この本はドリル形式で問題がズラリと並ぶので、手を動かさざるを得ません。問題にしたがって、手を動かしていくと、ああ自分はこの単語のスペルをきちんと覚えていなかったななど、発見があります。
個人的には内容も素晴しいと思っています。語源によるアプローチはほとんど初めてですが、個人的には非常に興味も持て、楽しく勉強できました。

ボキャブラリーのレベルが上がるほど、文章で出会う確率は下がってきてしまいます。つまり、読んでるうちに覚えるさ、という発想が必ずしも有効でなくなってしまうのです。そうしたハイレベルの単語を覚えるのには、丸暗記以外の何らかのクサビがあると非常に手助けになるとか思われます。この本ではそれが「語源」ということです。

ただ本はなかなか厚く、レベルも高いと思うので、気合いのある方、積極的にチャレンジしてみてください！！
