マックスウェル・モルツによるこのPsycho-Cyberneticsという作は、医学の見地から自己イメージにアプローチした著作です。モルツ氏は長年病院で外科医を務めてきましたが、その経験から患者には、症状が重いのにもかかわらず回復が早い人と、症状がそれほど重くないのにもかかわらずいつまでたっても快方に向かわない人がいることを知っていました。

なぜこのような違いが現れるのか？それは、個人が自己をどうイメージしているのかということに大きな関連がある、というのがこの本のテーマです。60年代の本なので、最新の脳科学の成果からの引用などはありませんが、当時流行していたウィーナーのサイバネティックスの考え方を援用して、モルツ氏は持論を展開します。

冷静な筆致で書かれた文章は非常に説得力があり、考えさせられることも多いのですが、一つだけ難を言えば、Psycho-Cyberneticsというタイトルがいただけません。「サイバネティックス」という言葉に「サイコ」という単語がくっついて、なにやらまがまがしく、怪しげな雰囲気をかもし出してしまっています。ですが、このタイトルの妙な怪しさを除けば、しっかりした内容の良書です。もっと読まれてもよい自己啓発の古典のひとつあると思います。

形成外科医（整形外科医ではありません。また「博士」は「医師　Medical Doctor」の翻訳違いです）マルツ先生の　現在も3千万部以上売れ続けている、Psycho-cyberneticsの翻訳本です。

　翻訳者が、医学に精通していなかったのか、意図して翻訳したのか分かりませんが、気になる部分はいくつかありますが、とても具体的で、後にダン･ケネディーが一部編集して、現在きこ出版からも翻訳が出ているNew Psycho-cybernetics「あなたは成功するように出来ている」よりも、マルツ先生の直接の言葉は身にしみます。
　そして何よりも、実践しやすい。とても良い本です。
　本文も短くて、自分自身があがくことなしに、目標を達成できる気になってきます。
　その過程で、努力や、失敗があることを述べていますが、どのように（楽に）乗り越えるか、がかかれているのが、この本のみそです。
　でも、医者の私からみて、それほどいかがわしさ感じません（理論的な飛躍も結構あるけど、、、New Psycho-cyberneticsよりは、違和感がない）。
　英語ではPsycho-cyberneticsも、New Psycho-cyberneticsも入手できますので、この翻訳も再販されることを期待します。
　ついでに、これはPsycho-cybernetics、New Psycho-cyberneticsとも英語のオーディオブックがとても良いです。マルツ先生のパワフルな肉声が聞けます。

この本を読んでまず思った事は、親や、学校、社会の教育の力の大きさだ。これらの教育でいつの間にか独自のセルフイメージを各自が無意識に形作る。皆、そのイメージに忠実に生きているわけだ。友人にカナダ育ちの日本人がいる。彼女の家族は全員日本人。でも教育は全てカナダで受けたので性格はとても日本的とは言えない。すべて考え方もストレート、誰とでもストレスなしにしゃべる全くの西洋人。でも実に楽しい。よく、育つ環境が大切だと聴くが、要は環境がその人のセルフイメージを作るから大切なわけだ。この本の目的が深く理解され、より健全なセルフイメージが育つ社会的環境が広がることを願います。
