訳者・井辻朱美氏は瀬田貞二・田中明子両氏の翻訳が大嫌いだということは有名だ。だからことあるごとに批判を展開している。それはまあ、個人の自由なのだが、この本でまでそれをやられると大変困るのである。

なぜなら、索引が索引の意味を成さないからだ。普通、この本を手にする人は瀬田・田中版『指輪物語』を読んで、それに馴染んでいるはず。だのにこの本は、あくまでも井辻氏が提唱する「新しくて正しい」日本語訳で書かれているために、瀬田・田中版の地名で検索できないことがあるのだ。

それを本人も意識してのことだろう。索引はあいうえお順でなくアルファベット順となっている。これは、自分の主張を通すために読者の便宜を無視していると考えられても仕方のない構成ではないだろうか。それとも、原著で読むことは大前提だから、その地名も英語表記で覚えていない読者は指輪愛好家とは思っていないのか…。

勿論、ジョン・ハウのイラストレーションは圧巻だ。購入するなら、英語が苦手でも我慢してハーパーコリンズ社の原著を求めたい。地図サイズも大きいし。装丁で言えば、日本版はタイトルロゴが目立ちすぎて、むしろ目障り。
結局のところは「原書房だからね…」ということ？

４枚の地図は、「ホビットの冒険」より荒れ地の国、中つ国、ベレリアンド、ヌメノール、サイズはすべて72cm四方の正方形。地図を囲むイラスト、特に「ホビットの冒険」の竜スマウグとビルボやドワーフ一行がすばらしいです。

この本は２分冊から成りハードカバーにおさめられている。一つは４つの地図が収納されている。ベレリアンド、ヌメノール、中つ国、荒れ地の国（霧降り山脈、闇の森、はなれ山のエリア）が対象である。つまりシルマリルの物語、指輪物語、ホビットの冒険の主要エリアは網羅している。ただし地図といってもディーテイルにはこだわっておらず、むしろジョン・ハウの絵を楽しむためのものだと考えた方がよい。

例えば荒れ地の国の地図には、スマウグが地図の枠として描かれ、下にはビルボ邸でのドワーフとの集会模様が、また上には大鷲グワイヒアと熊人ビヨルンの絵が挿入されている。地図に割かれているスペースは全体の半分強といったところか。地図自体も芸術性が重視されていて面白い。

もう１冊はブライアン・シブリーによる地図を交えた随筆調の本になっていて簡単な地名紹介が記されている。英語の地名検索には多少使える。また時たまジョン・ハウの絵が挿入されていて、全体的に芸術性を感じる本である。トールキン世界の画家の２大巨頭であるアラン・リーとジョン・ハウ、それぞれ違う世界観がある。アラン・リーと比べるとおどろおどろしい雰囲気のあるジョン・ハウのトールキン世界を堪能するにはお手頃な本である。
