 「いろんな種類の勇気があります」という語りで、物語は始まる。「見事な勇気」に出てくるのは、サーカスのブランコ乗り。「日常の勇気」では、高い台から飛び込む決心をする男の子。そのほか、初めて自転車の補助輪を外すこと、新しいズボンが破けてしまった理由を説明することなど、簡潔でありながら美しい言葉と元気の出るアートでつづられる行動に、子どもたちは自分自身を重ね、勇気づけられることだろう。

   作者の勇気についての洞察は、軽い調子のもの（「勇気とは、舗道のヒビの部分をあえて踏んでみること」）から、考えてみるに値するもの（「勇気とは、言い争いをしたあと最初に歩み寄ること」）までさまざま。ウェーバーの才知は全編にあふれているが、中でもイヌの立場で展開されるページはおもしろい。「イヌに注意」のサインが出ている家の中で、イヌが震えていて、「勇気とは、家の中の物音をチェックする君の仕事だ」とある。また、おしまいから2番目には、消防士と警察官の仕事現場が出てきて、「勇気とは消防士であること、警察官であること」と感動的だ。その反対のページには、飛び立つ飛行機を眺める母親と子どもが描かれ、「勇気とは、時にはサヨナラを言わなければならないこと」とある。

   恐怖とそれに打ち勝つ心を、さまざまな形で表現する『Courage』は、読み聞かせにも適している。大人と子どもの対話を自然に生み出し、子どもが恐怖心を乗り越える助けとなる1冊になるだろう。

あの「生きかた上手」の日野原重明先生の、９１歳にして初めての翻訳絵本。

勇気って、すごく一面的な解釈がされていると思う。
｢私たちはみんな、こんなにいっぱいの勇気をもって生きているんです。」
という日野原先生の言葉通り、
あれも勇気、これも勇気、あ、こんなのも勇気なんだー。
と、拡大解釈（！？）をもらって、とても勇気づけられ、

自分に自信と元気が湧いてきます。

「チョコレートのひとつは、あしたにとっておくのも　ゆうき。」
って、そうなんだー。
私も勇気をだそうっと。

やさしい英文が併記されているのも良いですね。
なんだかバーナード・ウェーバーさんには申し訳ないけど、
”日野原先生の本！”、って気がします。

予想以上によかったです。
最近、友達と喧嘩をした小学５年生の息子にプレゼントするために買いました。
文章は短いですが、勇気について簡潔に書いています。勇気を間違って考えていた息子にはいい出会いだと思います。
思春期の中学生が英語の勉強として読むのも良いですね。
最後のページに「いっしょに、ふたりが　はげましあうのも　ゆうき。」

と書いてありました。
読んでいて思わず、涙が出ました。
私が勇気を貰った本です。

　いろいろな勇気があることをこの本は教えてくれます。決して、ずご
いことを行うことだけが勇気ではなく、いろいろな形があることを教え
てくれます。「なるほど、これも勇気！」と納得するものばかりでした。

　本の帯に、「私たちはみんな、こんなにいっぱいの勇気をもって生
きているんです。」と日野原さんの言葉があります。まさにその通り

で、いっぱいの勇気を持って日々生きていることに気づかせてくれま
す。
