　この本はバイブル的存在であるが，初心者には非常に敷居が高い．たとえ，『はじめてのPerl』を読んだ後であってもそうである．また，初心者のPerlへの窓口とも言うべき，CGIについては全くと言って良いほど書かれていない．

　しかし，もしあなたが仕事としてPerlを使いたいと思ったら，必ず読まなければならない本である．また，趣味のwebプログラミングであったとしても，いままで，”PerlでCGI”のような本しか読んだ事が無いのなら，ぜひ読む事を薦める．｢Perlはこんな事もできたのか!｣とPerlを惚れ直すであろう(ただ，先に『はじめてのPerl』を読んだほうがよいだろう)．

　待望の3版の日本語版は2分冊化された．2分冊化と行っても，カテゴリ別に分けられたわけではなく，ただ単に重いから分けただけのようである．２版から，かなり内容が改められている．２版をもっている人も買うことを薦める．ここで概要を書いておこう．

vol1の概要と目次
I部 概説;II部の予習的内容. 約50頁

II部 Perlの真相(基本構成要素，単項演算子と二項演算子，文と宣言，正規表現，サブルーチン，フォーマット，リファレンス，データ構造，パッケージ，モジュール，オブジェクト，オーバーロード，タイ変数)この本の中核部分である.約400頁
III部 テクノロジーとしてのPerl(unicode，unicode,プロセス間通信，スレッド，コンパイル，コマンドラインインターフェース，Perlデバッガ,内と外)約200頁

強いて言えば，vol1は読みもの的．vol2はリファレンス的であると思う．しかし，vol1を読むときに参照したい用語集などがvol2にあるため，一度に2冊買った方がよいであろう．

分厚い本が好きな人

上記のどれかひとつにでも当てはまる方にお勧めです。

この本の文章を読むのは大変ですが、
理解した後の充実感は素晴らしいものがあります。
本当はこんな理由があって、こうなっているんだ、とか、

新たな発見が詰まっている本です。

しかし、あまりに重くあまりに高価なので、
なかなか手が出せませんが。

中級者以上のPerlプログラマ用の本です。
いやー重たい思いして買った甲斐はあります。

Perl can be messy, unintuitive and cryptic at best. This book helps to some extent, but its primary function seems to be a reference. In that respect, I find it well designed - I always seem to be able to locate the incantation I need via the index, command reference etc.

Perl hacking is becoming a requirement for techies, but with so much other stuff to keep your eye on we dont all have time to be wizards so this book makes for a reasonable familiar.
