最高に愉快だった Wayside School シリーズの外伝みたいなものかなー？ と深く考えずにページを開いてビックリ！「本当に」Arithmetic なんだあ！elf+elf=fool の解説から始まる数々の問題には思わず感心してしまいました。さすが変わった学校の変わった授業！しかし変わっていてもすべて論理的に解答できるパズルが55問。

単語は簡単ですが、英語初心者のわたしには「へえー英語では『繰り上がり』ってこう言うんだぁ」など算数関係の単語の使い方を初めて実用的に知ることができました。
そしてさすが Sachar、パズルだけではありません。日本のパズル本にも英単語の足し算などを見かけることはありますが、この本では Wayside School に転校してきた Sue の学校生活や Mrs. Jewls の授業風景とパズルが見事にからんでストーリーが進んでいきます。もちろんクラスメイトの面々ほか、お馴染みの人物も登場します。
Mrs. Jewls の実際の授業を受けられ、算数嫌いでも十分楽しめると思いますが、算数パズルが好きなら２倍楽しめるお得な本です。

英語は簡単ですが、中に出てくる問題はかなり難しいです。虫食い算とか論理パズルが得意な方は楽しめると思います。Waiside Schoolの算数はとっても不思議。Mrs. Jewlsが作るテスト問題もふざけていて笑えます。「読み物」というわけではないので、その点ご注意を。
