　２０年前、アメリカの小学校に通っており、先生に推薦されて読みました。児童文学のロングセラーです。

　リトル夫妻に産まれた次男は、何とネズミでした。彼の日々の冒険を描いている点は、映画と同じです。
　映画とは異なり、スチュアートは飛び去ったマーガロを追って旅に出ます。その旅の途中で、話が終わります。
　マーガロと再会出来るのか、家に戻れる日が来るのか、ラストシーンでは分かりません。
　しかし、旅の中でスチュアートが生活力を身に付け、たくましく成長するのが感じられます。
　読み終えた時は、切なさや寂しさと清々しさ、希望が入り交じった、不思議な感動を味わいました。
　映画は活劇として楽しめますが、原作の終わり方の方が好きですね。

　映画とのもう一つの違いは、ネズミの体のサイズに合わせた家具や小道具を、家族で色々工夫して手作りする様子が細かく描かれていることです。マッチ箱でベッドを作ったり、タンポポのミルクを飲んだり、アルミホイルを固めて１０セント硬貨を作ったり・・。
　ミニチュア家具が好きな人は、すごく楽しめますよ。

　同じ作者の手による「The trumpet of the swan」も、良書として有名です。「Stuart・・」を読んで気に入ったら、こっちも買っちゃえ！

人間の家庭に養子になった，プライドと分別をきちんと持ち合わせた可愛いねずみの冒険物語です．楽しい話の内容もさることながら，作者のE.B.Whiteの文章は，大変良い英語の勉強になります．今までどうしても原書が一冊読みきれなかったと言う方には，まずこの本からは始めてみることをお勧めします．
