時はクリスマス前、英国がユーロ採用を決定、
まもなくポンド紙幣がただの紙切れになろうとしているとき、
幼い兄弟が何百万ポンドもの大金が入ったバックを手に入れます。
「百万ポンドをどうやって現金で使うか」（副題）
しかも、期日は刻々とせまってきている！！！

と、ストーリー自体はキャッチーでセンセーショナルですが、
本書には、お金ということ、命ということについて、
大切なメッセージがふくまれていると思いました。

主人公デミアンはお母さんを病気で亡くし、
その直後に父さんと同じ小学校に通う兄のアンソニーと
引っ越してきたばかりで、周囲の環境の変化になじめません。
そのため、「隠遁所」（家族は「巣穴」と呼んでいる）に入り込んで、家に帰らなかったり、
彼は守護聖人オタクで、ネットで調べて、自分だけの世界に入り込んでしまいます。
大量のポンド札が落ちてきたのは、まさに段ボール箱で作られた彼の「隠遁所」の上でした。
デミアンはどちらかというと、おもちゃとかおかしとかのような世俗のものよりも、
天国にいるお母さんに早く会いたい、お金は貧困に苦しんでいる人に寄付したいと思い、
学校に回ってくる寄付集めのお姉さんの募金箱にどっさり寄付してしまって物議をかもしたり、
銀行に預けようとしても、子供だからという理由で口座を開けなかったり、
そのうちに、その大金をねらう怖い人につけまわされたり、物語は様々な展開を見せてゆきます。

そして、ちょっぴり世俗離れした、デミアンを支えるのが、数字に強いお兄ちゃんのアンソニーですが、
しっかりしているように見えても、アンソニーもまた、本当のところお母さんの死の受け入れが済んでいない。
しかも、お父さんもまた。。。

身の丈を超える大金を通して、彼らが様々な困難にあい、人々に触れてゆきます。
そして、ちょっとした結末があります。
お子さんと一緒に読むのもいいかもしれません。
クリスマスの本でもあります。

著者はイギリスはリバプール出身でリバプール郊外在住とあります。
言語はイギリス英語ですが、あまりコテコテではないので、読みやすいと思いました。

シンプルな英文で、展開が速いです。しかし、展開が速すぎることもありません。微妙な心理描写や凝った表現が無いため、ペーパーバックをまだ読んだことの無い人にオススメです。
また、親しみやすい子供・家族についての単語で書かれています。いつも辞書を引きすぎて、途中で挫折手してしまう方、辞書を引かなくても十分に読めます。
辞書無しで読んでみる最初の一冊として選んでいただけると、とても嬉しいです。
