The　writer , Nick Horny, was born in 1957 and grew up in north London. He has written 4 books and all of them are mainly about relationships. This book is a modern-classic very funny story about a very serious subject :love. The main topic of this story is also the relationship between a boy and a man. The different types of these two people happened to know each other and gradually come to get along with, depend on, and help each other.
Main character is Will who was a cool guy with a cool life. He had never worked before and actually he didn’t need to work for money because of the royalties on his father’s Christmas song. He has a lot of girlfriends but he never got too involved with them. He hates children. But he changes as we go on reading. The key character is Marcus who is 12 years old and has many problems in his family and school. His parents got divorced and he lives with his mum now. One day his mother tried to kill herself and he was often bullied by his classmates. This makes him so weird.
They happened to know each other and at first Will didn’t want to be involved in such difficult boy who has a lot of problems. But Will comes to think without notice that he wants to help Marcus. Actually he couldn’t do anything like a father but gave some advice and support for Marcus.
There are 3 parts in this story. The first part describes the man and the second part does the boy. In the end of the story, it describes both of them. The descriptions of the characters are well arranged and we can enter this story’s world easily. The author makes this story from the interesting viewpoint; that is a good friendship between 36-year-old man and 12-year-old boy. It makes this story more impressive.
This novel is written in simple English and it is easy for us to understand. I would recommend this book to you who would like to improve your reading skill.

ペンギンリーダーズのレベル4の本です。
私のレベル（TOEIC550）では理解できなかったので映画を見てからもう1度読みました。
