前回も最後に書いたのですが、やはり、１か月に１回の割合で、本物のCD-ROMをセットさせられ、正当な利用者であることをチェックされます。これは実に煩わしい限りです。さて辞書を使おうと思っても、起動せずにCD-ROMで認証が必要です、と言われると、なぜ、この辞書だけこんな事をしないといけないのだろうと思ってしまいます。この後も延々とチェックされ続けるのではなく、半年を過ぎると（6回チェックするという意味です）チェックされなくなるとしたら、これまたすばらしい機能なんですが、はたしてそうなっているかどうかは疑問です。パソコンで使い始めるとこれが実に快適です。起動に時間がかかるのが我慢できるのは、英語の使い方を調べるのに非常に便利だからです。しかし、同義語などで、言い換えたいような場合にはこの辞書は向いておらず、そういう際には、Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionaryに頼っています。また、一緒に付いてくる紙の辞書が不要かというと、これもフルカラーであり、実に引きやすく、パソコンを起動するのが面倒な場合には紙の辞書を使ってしまいます。また、この紙の辞書の中程に付いている、２０ページほどのLanguage Notesという所が実に役立ちます。電子メールの書き方なんてページがあったりして、なるほどと思わせる所はさすがです。使い込めば使うほど、ますます気に入ってくる辞書というものはそれぼど、ざらにあるものではありません。数千ページの分厚い紙の辞書を４~５冊使っていますが、使用頻度は非常に低いです。この辞書は手軽に引ける紙の辞書とCD-ROMがセットになっているので、非常にお買い得感があります。

これだけ充実したCD-ROMが書籍に付属しているとは！
まず辞書部分。本や新聞、雑誌から採取した100万を超える文。15万以上のコロケーション。
さらにアクティベーターまで付いている。
そのうえ「エクササイズ」のセクションでは、文法・語彙・文化のクイズ、さらにはディクテーションの練習までできてしまう。

起動に少し時間がかかるが、いったん起動すれば、単語の検索にはそれほどストレスは感じない。使用マシンはCeleron 598MHz。ノートパソコンで使用した際には少しストレスを感じたので、CPUのスピードよりはメモリの大きさに左右されるのかもしれない。

学習英英辞書のCD-ROMとしては、MacmillanとCobuildがあるが、充実度では本書がダントツだ。きびきびした動きと使いやすさではCobuild。ただ慣れの問題なのだろうが、品詞ごとにまとめていないCobuildスタイルは求める意味を探すのにちょっと不便なような気がする。Macmillanは全体的によくまとまっているという感じ。見た目も一番見やすいような気がする。毎月1回必ずCD-ROMをドライブに入れなければいけないのは煩わしいが。

書籍の方は・・・使っていない。CD-ROMがあまりに便利なので書籍の方は書棚の肥やしになりつつある。書籍を全く使わなかったとしても、これだけ充実したCD-ROMなら、値段以上の価値は充分にある。

他の方も指摘しておられる通り、ＣＤが秀逸です。
PCで英語の論文を書きながら使用しているのですが、
activatorも付属しており、用例も、新聞などで
実際に使われていたものから採用されているので、
このＣＤを使い初めてから、英語を書くのが飛躍的
に楽になりました。

確かに、起動に時間がかかる、定期的にオリジナル
ＣＤから所有者確認（？）を求められる等の不都合
もありますが、それを補って余りあるメリットを
感じています。ＣＤだと、例文をそのまま自分の
文章に貼り付けたりできるので、ホントに楽です。

（ある程度専門的な）英文を書く頻度が高い人に、
特にオススメしたいと思いますが、絵や写真も豊
富なので、中級者クラスでもでも無理なく使える
幅の広い辞書だと思います。
